My old machine had winrar that I used for free.

I've looked around and 3.71 is free for 40 days and I have to pay after the time is up.

When did this change?

Take a look at the freeware, opensource, 7-zip, it works with a variety of formats including rar.

* Packing / unpacking: 7z, ZIP, GZIP, BZIP2 and TAR
* Unpacking only: RAR, CAB, ISO, ARJ, LZH, CHM, Z, CPIO, RPM, DEB and NSIS

Winrar was never Free as far as I know ... Winzip had a 30 day trial after which
you should stop using it, but it doesn't really stop working. As to Winrar, I do not
know what happens after the trial, as I have a paid for key (which is good for
lifetime updates to newer versions), whereas with Winzip, they want you to Pay
for updates to the next Major Version (free updates within a version release)

Too bad that was back in July of 2006 and good for one day only.
And very likely, the code they let you use probably would not work
with any updates to the program ... For me, it is an inexpensive
program and when a program offers free lifetime upgrades, I do
not mind the small initial cost for it.

yea, but guess you didn't check the link out. Its still out there. But guess using it now is on the verge of being illegal...or is it? Maybe he had the free version and lost it? I'd say dl the 3.51 and se the registration info in the lnk.

If you can still get, go for it. Worst that will happen is it will
complain about the license code. And Winrar is currently at 3.71
but a key from 3.5 should work ok in 3.71 as it is in the same build.
It may not work on 4.x when it comes out. Some keys are limited to
a specific version. A bought key is not and if they do change the key
format later, they will give the legit buyer the new key.

WinRAR was never free. Unless you were a pirate.

Buy it. What is it, like $29? Worth every penny.

geez,..Guess me and thousands more then didn't get it for free last year FROM rarlab on a give away guess we all were dreaming? If you would of read the posts you would of seen that it was offered for free.. I'm still using the free ungradable 3.51 with no issues. You can just google for 3.51 version and google the free key code that was for that one as its still out there even in the link I gave. No key for 3.51 won't work on other versions.

Uh, yeah. There was a one-time promotion for a specific version of WinRAR. 3.51 sounds right. But guess what? 3.7x is out and it has major improvements over 3.51. And you cannot upgrade with your "free" license key.

You said Winrar was NEVER free unless you were a pirate now you say it was. I never said to use 3.51 key on 3.7x and I even stated the 3.51 was ungradable (well meant non upgradable but sure you know that)....

OK, you win. There was a one-time promotion a long time ago where you could get a "free" key for 3.51 only. Happy now?

I use 7Zip like Shadenfroh linked to. Works very well, and they have a 64bit version if that suits your O/S.

FWIW, I never called anyone a pirate. I said pirating it was the only way to get it "free".

Why must you have WinRAR? Like several others have mentioned, 7-Zip works great and it's free.

If you always use right click to extract then you never see the message.

I think I remember you saying that before. I've never had any issues with 7Zip. I don't really unzip a ton of files, but I bet I've done at least 50 without problems.
