Is winME worth it if your 98se system is rather unstable?

I've heard WinME is somewhat crappy, but it's supposedly more stable. I've been having problems with windows locking up or programs crashing. I've tried re-installing windows, however, I have a lot of stuff on my drive and re-formatting is not an option at this stage. Does anyone have any suggestions or knowledge about the differences in stability and OS quality between ME and 98?

Ideally, I'd like to use Win2000, but if it doesn't have ICS (internet connection sharing) or can't share a connection with another computer that's using ICS, it's not an option. Does anyone know if 2k can do ICS?

i tried winme and it was more unstable
if you cant reformat then put everything you want to keep into one folder, then boot into dos mode and delete every other folder and file, then do an instal. no need to reformat to get a "fresh" instal

bottom line: do NOT try winme

Well, I find WinME more stable than Win98SE was on my second PC. It's a Celeron 400 OC'ed to 500Mhz in an Asus P2Z-VM.

Me is working fine for me. not a noticable difference in stability. i don't use any of the new features. theres nothing negative i can say about it, neither positive. except for the fact that it defrags a lot faster.

I've use WinME, Win98 SE and Win2k I find that Win98 SE is much faster then WinME and more stable then WinME, WinME is real slow for me even with my PIII 800eb 256 MB RAM. Win2k is the most stable, secure and fast out of the three OS. BTW Win2k does have ICS, you can find ICS in the start -> help type in Internet Sharing or something like that it'll show you how to do it.

i'd say it's really dependent on your computer. i have heard many people rant and even more grunt about winme, so i say try it if you have the time and see how it is for you. there is really no definitive formula whether it'll work for you or not, so install, on a different partition if you like, and see how it is.
i have winme running on 2 comps- duron980 on abit kt7-raid and celeron366 on abit be6. it runs flawlessly and much better than win98se and even win2k (have had so many problems w/ my win2k partition).

An unstable win98 system will prolly not regain what it never had by upgrading to winMe. Most instability is caused by bad drivers and sytem conflicts. If they exist in win98, they will still be there in winMe.

My system used to be quite stable, but windows gets crappy over time, and recently it's been getting on my nerves. There are no compatibilitiy issues between any of my hardware, and wiping the windows directory and re-installing should fix it, but would I go longer between re-installs with ME?
