Is WinMe the worst Memory hog ever???

I have a dual boot system running WinMe/Win2k. So all hardware is identical. It's a P3-600@800/256MB RAM/20Gig/SB Live...etc. Using Freemeter Pro the memory usage is amazingly different. Under Win2k, it floats between about 13%-40% depending on usage. Under WinMe with nothing open and a fresh boot it's at a constant 94%+!!! WTF? I had to move up to 384MB to get it to normal levels. Now it's at where Win2k was with 256MB. I then istalled it onto another machine that had WinMe on there to check if I just screwed something up. And with 128MB it is 95%+ all the time. How can it use so much memory doing nothing?

That isnt normal. Do have a program(s) in startup that take up all resources that are not being used. I have seen simple programs that take up 100% of free cpu cycles. I had winme on my machine and it ran fine, i thought it was the other way around, that win2k was the ram hog. But i would try shutting off all of your non-essential apps, and see what happens.

Depends how you define hog.
Win2k should use more RAM consitantly, but it won't leak, it will actually be using all the RAM it says it is.
WinME should start out using less, but over time as you run and exit programs you'll get leaks and you'll get RAM that says it's in use, but the program ended some time ago.

What you said there isn't normal though I don't think...I'm running Win98SE (I refuse to even look at ME it's awful), so I could be wrong, but I don't think that's right.

Thats pretty much what i've noticed too. Win2k is a hell of a lot better as far as memory goes.

Yeah, i keep reading how Win2k eats up the ram, but I don't see it.

This is on a fresh install of WinMe, nothing running in the backround.

You guys should try that program out and see what you get. Bet you're surprised.

Topshelf,

What WinTel would prefer you to do is simply buy a 1.4GHZ P4 when available. "It should solve that problem nicely."
