for the past 3 days ive been trying to run windows update (win2000 + sp3 here) and it shows me that there's aboot 3 critical and 2 noncritical updates i need but when i click "intall now" it gives me an error...arghhh

has anyone else been getting this or is it just me?

I have the exact same problem, and I think I solved my problem. I can install Window Updates after I reinstall W2kSP3 until I install my USB2 drivers for my Intel chipset and on-board NEC USB2 chip. If I go to windows Update first there is a new Microsoft USB drives version 5.1.2600. If I install this driver first then update with the ones I have I can still access WU. THis is after reinstalling W2k about 10 times tring to figure out what the hell was wrong.

windowsupdate didn't work for me either after installing SP3 and the problem were solved by reinstalling IE6.

Same problem here.

I had to break down and download the patches by hand to install them.

how did you do this??

just reinstalled IE6 and still no go

Here is the fix for you people that are having issues with the error on Windows Update site.

1. Delete the Windows Update Folder
2. Delete all instances of iuctl.dll

This is caused by an internal SSL certificate inside windows update network which just got renewed.

There is a thread on this at this Site.

No problems. I only had one Win2k Server do this to me, and was pissing me off. 🙂

No, that folder you are pertaining to I think is the setup folder for IE. You can delete that if you like as well. Just try deleting the .dll file first, and then update your OS as usual.

Are there any benefits to using windows update? I mean, apart from the obvious security patches etc .... what if you just install stuff manually when you feel like? I haven't done that in a while, how many patches are we talking here?

well quite a few i guess

i suppose for the average user there isn't really any performance or tangible difference in these updates but if there's a security bug out there and i have the choice to correct it i will....
