is windows xp sp3 firewall reliable?

Can I rely on the xp sp3 firewall, or do I need another firewall in addition to it (or in place of it) ?

I was using Kerio Personal Firewall v2.1 (it's the same as Tiny Personal Firewall) but I'm wondering if I can get by without it.

I know a firewall isn't anti-virus/anti-spyware -- I have AVG Free 8.0 installed.

thanks.

hmmmm... i have been running without an os firewall behind my router firewall set at stealth mode for a couple of months now with no ill effect with only AVG Free to make sure i am protected and I haven't been infected for almost a month now. This is an experiment as to how minimal one needs to be in their security. So far so good. My OS hasn't acted up at all and everything seems to be ok.

I've used XP's(and now Vista's) firewall for years. It my favorite solution. It does what it should, and no hassles.

Its fine for an entry-level outbound firewall. Use it from behind a decent NAT router/switch and it would take a hacker of exceptional or uncommon skill to gain access without having some inside help. And no, you would not make any long list of interesting targets that such a hacker would bother with, unless you're a Fortune 500 executive or something.

Periodically check what has been registered with Windows Firewall to have outbound access and remove uninstalled programs or anything else you aren't sure about. And watch what you are letting onto your PC.

the xp one is ok, vista and 7 ones are better though. I prefer to use comodo personally, more functionality and inbound and outbound traffic control is big.

ok, thanks all for the informative answers. It sounds like I'll be fine sticking with the xp sp3 firewall.

Though if anyone still wants to chime in, I'm always interested in hearing more information!
