Is Windows XP going to be unavailable?

Several of my customers have told me that WinXP is no longer available for purchase locally. They were told at Best Buy and Wal-Mart that the retailers were instructed to "send back" any remaining unsold copies of WinXP.

Is this true? If so, what's going to happen to all the people that have a WinXP machine with a failed hard drive (no restore partition) or lost/missing XP cd's? Many older machines are not Vista compatible....

Maybe not retail, but XP will be available on the net for quite a while, as they are going to support at least PRO for seven or more years. Word has it, they also extended the other os support too, in view of all the upgrades that were sold. If you look hard enough, you can still buy W95 or 3.1
