Is Windows XP compatibility mode really the answer?

Obviously, support for XP applications in later versions of Windows is a big issue for Microsoft to implement this great and seamless feature (at least on paper it seems great). I've been thinking, is this really the answer to the legacy problem? Now, I may be stupid, but wouldn't having this feature kill the initiative for applications that currently only work in XP to have the updated versions (or new software) run in Vista/7? The applications would just be XP apps working inside Win7. If these applications have no initiative to have their apps run in newer versions of WIndows, then would Windows 8 and above be nothing but a pretty interface with XP in the backend? Again, I just may be stupid.

That's always been the case with new releases of an OS, DirectX, OpenGL, filesystems, etc. From MS' perspective it's a no brainer, they want to sell you a new copy of Windows and that just isn't going to happen if your software doesn't work. And people have been saying the same thing about WINE on Linux too. And to an extent it is true. But being able to run those apps gives you the ability to get more users, quicker and once you have users there will be motivation to support that OS.

Agree w/Nothinman. In Win 7 Ultimate, I am running about 3 apps in XP Compatibility mode. Basically, they run perfectly and do what I need them to do, and it would cost a couple of C notes to buy new upgrades. That can come later when income returns once again. IOW, some of it is an economic necessity, especially these days.

i don't see why it would kill initiative. its like saying theres no reason to come out with a new version of anything😛
