Is Windows Update working OK? Hangs at 0% on the 4 XP machines here.

Can someone try it and post real quick? This is driving me nuts! I just need to figure out if it is MS or a local problem here!

4 different types of PCs with XP Pro just suddenly this morning hang at 0% when scanning for updates!

Yes, but they are cloned copies of the "Open License" version (I work for a k-12 school district - bought volume licenses!)

Thanks guys - it must be either our firewall/gateway or the latest AntiVirus update or something. I thought it was just the PC I was building - but then ALL the machines here in my office hung when i tried it!!!!!

I LOVE when things like this happen! 😉

I had this happen once when updating Win 98. After 20 minutes of searching on the Windows site I came across a patch that fixed the problem (there was a known issue that caused it to hang at 0%). I don't know if the same is true for Win XP.

Could be firewall... I had problems awhile back that turned out to be my hosts file. (I'm using my hosts file to help minimize the loading of junk...) When I discovered that and temporarily disabled the hosts file, it worked fine.

Have you checked the tech-supp site? It seems like there's a faq about it hanging at 0%: Find it here

Suggestion 1:
Install the latest scripting engine 5.6 from:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/downloads/list/webdev.asp
Suggestion 2:
Repair Internet Explorer
1. Open up Control Panel.
2. Open Add/remove programs.
3. Select Microsoft Internet Explorer and Internet Tools.
4. Click Add/remove.
5. Click Repair.
6. Follow the steps provided by the Repair Wizard.
7. Click OK

Could also be a problem if you go through a proxy. Thats what happened where I work, unticked the 'use proxy blah blah' setting in IE properties and it worked fine.

Hmmm . date and time gets synchronized on login to the Novell server by the Netware client - so I don't think that is it.

I undocked my laptop and connected via my backup dial-up account (bypassing our network) and it worked fine.

Now................. What the heck happened to our network???!!!!! Checking Bordermanager proxy and firewall.........

(Thanks for your posts everyone. I initially just wanted to make sure it was our network for sure and not Microsoft being hosed. However, I appreciate the extra input!)
