it has plenty of competition.

there are lots of software that screws over your system settings without asking you anything.

for example, install itunes, and you'll get 5 running services and all your web browser plug-ins will be taken over.

yeah, but in terms of getting the actual program to install...

I mean, 1st an installer is downloaded, then it opens and asks what other extra software to install, then it takes a while and it will ask you again,

WHAT OTHER EXTRA SOFTWARE DO YOU WANT TO INSTALL?

It then checks the pc for god knows what before installing the chosen software...

Then, if windows update is runnig, or if the pc is busy doing anything else, it will just quit after 10 minutes or so, to say....oops cannot complete installation

Try later....

short answer: yes. i hate all those messaging programs such as AIM, live, yahoo, so on and so forth. just all bloated with random crap like toolbars and extra garbage. just stick to the AT forums and thats all the "instant messaging" you will ever need ;)

Yep! It's right up there with Logitech Mouseware, ATI Catalyst, and iTunes. ;)

Miranda IM Portable is what I use for AIM, ICQ, MSN, and Yahoo. All the other IMs - who cares?!?!?

Kind of a pain to setup initially too, but it's small, portable, and doesn't mess with your 'puter...

EDIT

Oops! Here's a link: http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/miranda_portable

This proggie has been around for years, so I imagine everyone's heard of it - but John Haller made it better!

Pidgin is pretty lightweight. That's what I use for the few friends who still bother to IM me.

AOL and Yahoo are far worse. MSN asks about additional software while it's already installing. AOL and Yahoo stop the whole process and pre-check the opt-in checkboxes for you. What about Flash player? You just want a browser plug in and it tries to opt you in to a whole office suite. J.H.C.

You have to understand that with all 3 you are getting free software that also requires significant infrastructure on the back end to run. What do you expect exactly?

Do any of the alternative IM programs work with webcams? That's the only reason I put MSN Messenger Live on my system. The grandparents and the kids love that feature.

you are all right about MN mesenger being the worst as far as install and also AIM taking up other processes.

BUT Msn Live Messenger i believe is the best IM program. i have like 50+ smileys and i love using smileys to express myself. AIM by far i think is the worst for smileys.

Sorry guys...

I'm not complaining about the extra software....I'm talking about the installation process itself....

I fix pc's and the #1 thing I have to install is the Windows Live messenger (customers couldn't care less about the antivirus) and it is the WORST INSTALLATION I have ever dealt with....

It takes forever and there isn't even a standalone installer...it requirer the user to be online and it checks the pc for god knows what before it even installs, and lots of times it just quits if anything else is going on in the background, such as windows updates and the like.....

What a PITA it is to deal with the whole windows live experience!
