Is windows 64bit edition worth getting

cpmer

Senior member
I just purchased a new computer and i was wondering if it was worth getting windows 64bit edtion. This computer is used mainly for gaming.

Holy smokes he's got an Athlon 65!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! haha, seriously, read old posts first. But just to give you a heads up, look at the hardware in your comp and then go to those company webpages and see if they have 64-bit drivers. 2nd, realize that 32-bit games run a hair slower on WinXP 64-bit edition.

The only real reason to get the 64-bit edition is because Windows XP is so boring. Everything works! Where's the day's of Win95 and 98 where you had all these little manual tweaks and programs to get things going faster. Where things wouldn't work quite as they should!

I'm about to install WinXP 64 just to give myself something new to fool around with. But, if you don't have the know-how or the time, don't get Windows 64-bit. Besides, not like any 64-bit games are out yet anyway

Generally that shouldn't be true, they should run at least as fast if not faster from the on-die memory controller and extra cache if you have a model with more cache.

That's not a valid reason, because XP 64 is nearly exactly the same as XP 32. The only real differences are under the hood and all the extra icons for the 32-bit versions of things MS included like IE. Even then you won't be able to tell the difference between the 32-bit and 64-bit versions, except that things like flash won't work in the 64-bit versions because you can't load a 32-bit library into a 64-bit processes address space.

performance wise,, bah its only slightly faster and has better memory management.

there is absolutely no difference between XP pro and XP 64,,,, just wait til that beastly overbloated hog Longhorn comes out in about 30 yrs.....

ive tried XP 64 Mandrake 64 Suse 64 Fedora core 64 all of them and well nothing,,, all your gunna do is run into hardware and software issues. XP 64 is good cuz it will run 32bit apps. but hardware and software makers arent up to speed yet.
although with the hardware in my sig i have all the drivers i need. Creative even made 64bit drivers. which worked flawlessly for me.

im curious to see how Chronicles of Riddick runs in its 64bit mode. Too bad i have the xbox version and cant justify buying the pc version just for 64bit mode.

The memory management is virtually the same, I believe there's some NUMA logic to handle the added latency when allocating memory from a "far" CPU on SMP Opteron boxes but that's minor.

Chronicles of Riddick has 64 bit version ? woohhooo.. if youre system has nforce / geforce then drivers are available from nvidia. There are a few little quirks but mostly it seems to work just like regular win-xp for 32 bit apps and games. And much faster for 64 bit apps and games, including all the built in stuff (the gui, etc). But there are only few 64 bit apps avaialble. Still it's FREE, which makes it a good deal.

I didn't think the 65's were supposed to out until next year.
It figures... Leave it to cpmer to flush out the bleeding edge of technology!

Only reason to install win64 at its current state is to play around and find out what's new. Personally it would be too much hazzle for me installing and re-installing all the time (i would also need to buy a new computer first). If you like to try new things out and don't mind re-installing your OS go for win64, otherwise just stick with 32-bit.
