Is Windows 200 Pro SP4 worth using on any of todays newer systems?

Depends what you want to do. I know some games have artificial limits placed on them so they dont run on windows 2000. Apart from that its basically very similar to XP.

As long as you avoid hyperthreaded CPUs and stick with true dual-core processors, you should be OK for most purposes. (Win2k treats hyperthreaded CPUs just like 2 true cores, scheduling stuff on the idle thread that can actually cause hyperthreaded processors to run slower in many scenarios. XP has an optimization specifically to recognize hyperthreading and use it more efficiently.)

Also, I believe the Win2k Pro kernel won't recognize 4 processors, so quad-core systems are out of the question. Win2k Server doesn't have that limitation.

I would also be a little worried that some newer devices may not have drivers for Win2k before too long... Realistically many hardware vendors don't support Win2k anymore, so you need to be wary of what goes into a Win2k system.

Well, here's the way I feel...

W2K Pro still works fine for the majority of my desktop machines, thank you!

MS is still updating W2K on an almost monthly basis - when they abandon W2K, so will I. 😉

Laptops are a different matter.

On "todays newer systems", it's Vista or nothing for me!

XP has always been a non-starter... I hate it... even though I use it at work daily, I still don't like it.

Um...

Any other questions? 😀

Windows 2000 is not compatible with P35 motherboards... installer will lock itself up and there are no drivers.

I wouldn't be surprised if that is a case for latest nvidia ones as well.

I've read that P35 & Nvidia owners have problems with Vista too!

I think it's a chipset limitation 'thingy' not the OS... 😉

Hyperthreading causes performance problems in lots of situations even when the OS is knowledgeable about the shared resources.

Security fixes only, no new development is happening.

I have been using Win2K on an Abit IP35 Pro with no problems. Intel chipset drivers still support Win2k. There are also Win2K drivers for onboard LAN and sound and all my peripherals. So I am not sure where you got your information from. I was also able to install Win2K on a Toshiba laptop that came with Vista Home basic. It needed to be able to join a domain. I had to do a little work to find all the drivers but it wasn't difficult at all. And it runs a heck of a lot better with Win2k than Vista. I will continue to use Win2K until it is no longer supported. I just picked up a Q6600 and I'm gonna try it on Win2K server just for sh1ts and giggles.

My computer would lock up during installation, at the point when kb mouse and video are being detected; going on regular SATA or PATA drive with AHCI or such modes disabled.

Any tricks you used? What is your SATA mode?

Using an unattended CD slipstreamed with SP4 and current hotfixes, DX9 and IE6 (using HFSLIP), and drivers by winnt.sif. Installing on a 74GB Raptor on the Intel SATA port. AHCI is disabled. I haven't tried an IDE device on the Jmicron controller other than an IDE DVD-RW. And I can install from either IDE or SATA DVD-RW.

I do remember a while back where the system would freeze like you mentioned while detecting devices, I found out it was the Nvidia graphics driver I had decided to use. I changed drivers and it worked fine. Hope you can solve the problem.

Okay, reason I am claiming that is that intel doesn't support Win 2000 anymore for my motherboard based on P35 - you won't find chipset software for 2000. And some boards actually state that ICH9R is not compatible with Windows 2000.

My mobo doesn't have JMicron but Marvell chipset.

There you go, Intel chipset drivers for windows 2000.

Just through anecdotal discussions online, I find that a lot of people ask this question because Windows 2000 is the last OS not to require product activation and is much easier to warez.

ditto, but there are no RAID or AHCI drivers.

i only wish there was some drivers for my hd4850!!!

i am currently running xp64pro--and have a win2k on a dual boot set up.
