Is window 98 SE still better for gaming.

I am looking at buying an AMD XP system (probably an Asus 266V-e - or Soyo Dragon plus motherboard) with a Gf3 ti200 at a clone shop. Is Windows 98 SE still better for gaming than XP? I like war based and other strategy game, flight simulators and sport simulator. I have a lot of game that says they do not support window NT. XP may be more stable but it may not play all my game title. My previous system had run on Windows 95 OSR 2 so I do not want to spend the extra money for windows XP including extra memory right now. Windows XP supposedly run best with 512 MB of ram whereas Window 98 SE run best with 256 MB. I will buy window XP, when they come with a second release and when the PC2700 memory is readily available from Micron. I plan to start with 256 MB stick of PC 2100 memory and replace it with 512 MB of PC2700 when I eventually run Window XP. I hope to use this motherboard with 166/333 MHz FSB AMD CPU.

Is Windows 98 SE still better for gaming than XP? IMO, yes. Certain games of mine still run smoother in 98 than XP and ALL of my daughters games work in 98 and not in XP. I still have XP as my main OS and like it alot, but still dual-boot for a few apps that work better in 98.

W98se, definately. I got my new comp less than two months ago, went straight to W98se, XP was not and still would not be in the running, i'd be sticking with W98se and a glance at W2000.

I don't think so - I upgraded to Windows 2000 afew months back from Win98SE and am nothing but pleased with it. I have not yet come across one problem with compatability under Windows 2000.

I wouldn't even consider Win98se. I primarily use Win2k, and if I have an incompatability which is extremely rare, I switch to WinME. I would consider WinXP once they get the compatability bugs worked out. XP really doesn't have much over Win2k though. It's kinda like the difference between WMP 6.4 and 7. Win2k is very tweakable making it an excellent gaming OS if you don't mind shutting down some of the extra services, and tweaking it a bit.

98SE is better for gaming to me. I have a 1.4Ghz with 1Gig of RAM and it simply plays better in 98SE. I dual boot both 98SE and XP .

haven't been in win98 for a while, so dont know about current games, but imho the gain in stability (not crashing when you load a game) is worth more to me than the 10fps i'd lose (if at all) in xp. playing 4 of the newest/biggest current games and no problems at all.

I'll second the Win2k approach. Only problem I've encountered is that to run Baldur's Gate 2 you have to log on as admin.
