Is win2k upgrade worth a try, or should i go straight to clean install?

Personally, if your anything like me I would go with a clean install. I hate the possibility of knowing there may be old drivers etc on my system....

😉

well rite now after i uninstalled the winme upgrade, my 98 is kinda screwy, so i guess ill try 2k and then can i install 98 after i install 2k and do a dual boot

and

Can i have a win95 and win98 computer on my network along with my win2k pro computer?

I have heard that if you buy the upgrade then you actually have the full version. The only thing you have to have is a win98-bootdisk or so. Everything else is the same. But hopefully more will respond to this. But I'm almost positively sure about this 🙂.

No problems what so ever having a win9x along with a win2k 🙂.

AoD 😉

Dual booting with 98/2000 works fine until you might a major hardware change such as switching mobos. I switched from intel to amd then had to reformat after everything went to hell.

I upgraded Win98SE to Win2k once and found it ot be unstable for some reason. I formated the drive and did a clean install of Win2K and it seemed to work much better. I can't explain why but I would say to go with the clean install.

Whenever the new OS requires all new drivers for almost all hardware, I do a clean install. For the most part, the 95 > 98 > 98se > ME parade was pretty safe. But I did 2k fresh.

if you install win2k, then try to install 98 do two things. First make sure you didnt convert your hard drive to NTFS, 98 wont work. Second you will have to repair your win2k bootloader off the win2k cd. I think it just checks to see what operating systems are installed and then puts the bootloader back on. 98 will overwrite this if you install after you isntall win2k.

chiwawa626--I just gotta try that sometime. I've been wondering the same thing. However, I'll do it on a W98SE imaged hard drive first (imaged all the way from 95a). Imaging 9x to use on a different pc is no problem. I just delete the correct key in the registry before I make my first full boot to the new pc. So.....hmmm....if I delete that same key, then overinstall W2K???? And, make a dual boot system by having 98SE imaged on 2 partitions, and overwriting one?

Let us know if you try it and it works.

Anyone have a link that is good for 'splaining upgrading W98SE to W2K? Either clean or not?
