I got 2600 from MS directly, and the letter included stated that 2600 was the final build. So yes, it is. Oddly enough though, the beta testers still have the "beta" 180 day license. Although MS has stated that it is final code they also said it does expire after 180 days.

There are three different versions of build 2600 floating around. The one with files dated the 18th, the FRE, is pre-RTM. It was later announced that this build would be RTM, but three security bugs were fixed for the eval and OEM versions.

There are two versions of 2600.0, one is the Evaluation, and the other is the final release build. They are exactly the same in capabilities and features, but the Evaluation build still has all the limits that previous Eval's had. The evaluation 2600.0 is final code but still contains the Evaluation limitation of 180 days.

The release 2600.0 is the same as the Evaluation version of it, but it removes all of the evaluation specific things such as a 180 day usage limit.

There is also a Corporate version, which is final code, not evaluation and it does not have Windows Product Activation.

The Devilsown ISO that is floating arround the warez scene is the Evaluation 2600.0 version that has been "patched" with the Corporate files to remove the 180 day evaluation limit and the WPA. So it is effectively the same as the release Corporate edition, but it's not a "true" final edition in that it's been hacked to emulate a final.

so is this ISO safe to use as my OS? I don't want to wait to October to buy it. I want to try it now, but I don't want to all of a sudden have my OS stop working on me, beuase I do a windows update or anything. So is it a safe bet that i'll be able to use it for the long haul?

Thanks!

So then where does one LEGITIMATELY get the Corporate Edition build 2600 (without activation???) I'm assuming that this 'Corporate Edition' is WinXP Professional and not WinXP Home. I have a legit copy of WinXP Pro RC1 that MS sent as part of an 'Experience Tour' promo package and I don't wanna be stuck with old code and a 180-day license...but shame if I'm gonna wait till Oct. 25th!!

If I know who can get it legitimately, I may be able to pull a few strings and get a copy myself...

The only way to get it legitimately is:

1. Buy the retail copy October 25.
2. Purchase a computer that has it preinstalled on September 25.
3. Join MSDN Universal (Microsoft Developers Network) for $2499 and you can download it September 25.

You will never be able to get the 'corporate edition' legitimately. That is the only flavor not requiring activation but is only available to corporations that are part of Microsoft Select, MS's open licensing program. There is no activation, but there is a key you must use that is assigned to your company so they know who to yell at if it leaks.

There is no 2605 build. 2600.0 is the final build.

No. The Devilsown ISO is an evaluation copy, but it has been patched and modified with the Corporate edition files to remove WPA and the 180 day limit.

Indeed, and by answering the questions about the Devilsown ISO I am technically breaking AT rules against discussion and distribution of Warez or related information to any priated software.
