I installed Windows ME on a PIII 733 running on a Tyan Trinity 400 motherboard which uses the VIA Pro 133 chipset... the OS simply crashed endlessly to blue screens, had DLL errors, caused weirdness in IE, didn't install properly all sorts of craziness - even after reformatting and doing a clean install. No weird hardware - Creative SBLive, Creative GeForce Pro, 128MB SDRAM blah blah - PC runs wonderfully under Windows 98 (Which I'm using again now). But install ME and it even crashes to a blue screen doing a diagnostic Direct X test using the default microsoft drivers.

I spent a week working on this with Microsoft support and the only thing they could come up with was that reducing the AGP aperture size to 4MB made the system more stable... hello - VIA chipset problem?

Is anyone else here using ME with a Tyan Trinity 400 or any other VIA chipset? I know someone else here was having these weird crashes and errors and they mentioned having a VIA motherboard too....

talk people!

I'm not running near the system you are but haven't had any problems (fingers crossed). Mine is FIC VA503+ with the via chipset, K62 450, voodoo3 2k. Still getting use to it. Mine was install over win98se.

I guess it could specifically be the Tyan Trinity 400 with the VIA Pro 133 chipset... hmmmmm

I've got a K6-2 system running an Alton M577 board (Via MVP3 chipset) and it's been running fine. Probably a driver problem.

Guys - re-read my original post. Windows ME had all these problems - with the ORIGINAL microsoft drivers that ship with the install. It also has all these problems with ALL the latest drivers installed for every device. We even systematically installed drivers one by one to see if they affected the system.
Reminder - Microsoft Support had my PC and couldn't isolate the problem other than it being an incompatibility of ME and my VIA chipset.

I have had zero problems with p3v4x. As a matter of fact I have seen dozens of posts with people using via chipsets and ME with minor problems, not the huge ones you seem to have had.
Since when does microsoft "have" pc's??? sounds like "operator error" to me!!!

Sorry tydas, I edit a games publication and Windows ME was sent to me for review. I'm a fairly advanced PC user and ME screwed my system. Microsoft picked up my PC and took it to the support centre and had their technicians do formats, installs, play around with drivers and BIOS - all sorts of stuff. But my only solution was to go back to Win 98. It was not an "operator error" dude.

C'mon!!!! I doubt severly microsoft did all that!!!anywhose, win me is based on win 98 so for you to have such a drastic problem from one to the other is highly unusual...I use all my win 98 drivers on me with no prob...drivers from the maker not ms
Your probally using some cracked version...another thing, the arrogance you use in your messages lends me to believe your posts are 90% BS! Whats all this- RESPOND! Talk people, Re-read my original post!

Why would i make this up? Microsoft went through all this trouble because I'm going to write about Windows ME in a national publication. They don't want me writing that it's utterly unstable and can screw your system. I could give you phone numbers and email addresses of the Microsoft people I deal with to prove what I'm saying, but I don't think they'd appreciate it.
I deal with not only Microsoft, but Sony, Nintendo and other companies - the version of ME i got was release code direct from Microsoft.

If you want to whinge that I'm writing BS then you're wasting both of our time. This is a serious technical issue.

Thanks for the link to the VIA forums.
The magazine is here in Australia, it's called Hyper.
