Enough to make a sale difference? Should I buy it? Or just keep my 98SE workhorse?

As long as you're not looking for performance and stability gains, you should be fine. After all, it is the most recent 9x OS, and it contains the newer TCP/IP codes which will improve your broadband speed.

I think I'll stay with 98Lite and avoid new unnecessary bloatware. My last clean install came in at 72Mb..fast and stable. Besides, I may want to install Doom for old time sakes.

You can still run Doom in a DOS box in Me, as long as you have SBPro/16 emulation drivers loaded for your sound card.

I personally despise Me. The cosmetic makeover looks nice, but they're focusing too much on making the OS idiot-proof (which efficively means more difficult to customize). Plus, if you're running applications that make heavy use of TCP/IP, you might run into some problems after an upgrade from 98(SE) due to Me's new TCP/IP stack (almost identical to the one found in Win2k). $50 is a little much to be charging for a "step-up" (heck, even the $30 they charged for a 98 to 98SE upgrade was a bit much).

well, I will just tell you my experience.

when i was using win98se, i have to reboot the system at least once a day or two. otherwise the memory leak is terrible. also, with normal use there will be a crash or two every week.

i have been using winme for 2 months, and i haven't reboot it once, and it hasn't crashed once on me neither. i think it is quite stable, though it is no match with win2k.

speedwise, it is the same for me. i don't see anything run faster or slower.

I prefer Win Me, I have only had one or two crashes in about one month, that was from Flight Sim 2000 and WMP7, I prefer the interface, so, basically, i think that it is better

Win 95 to Win 98 had some memory management improvements...but it was pretty much the same. Win95 was unstable on my system, Win98SE has ran this system since january with maybe 2 crashes, so I'm happy with that.

Win ME is almost purely a cosmetic makeover of Win98...it should be Win98 3rd Ed. Apperntly the TCP/IP stack is imporved, but all the things you lose make it not worth the upgrade to me.

As Erasmus-x said they are trying to make it idiot proof, which is good for most users, but for myself I don't like losing system level control. I also have had occasion to use DOS Mode once in a while.

If you have some sort of issue with Win98SE then you probably want to upgrade to win ME, if you are happy with Win98SE (as I am) I woudln't change it.

Windows ME lite is the way to go. Cut out the movie maker, media player 7 and that restore junk and it runs pretty good :)

I hate it, it will run for a while, then when I reboot (after about 1 or 2 months, I got it from MSDN) I get a blank desktop (just wallpaper) and a mouse cursor and it freezes, yet another unfinished OS, 98 is bad but it never did that. I just wish that 2k would run DiabloII in D3D and would run NFS5.

I hear good and bad things as far as Win ME goes, my friend runs it and he likes it. I've seen mixed results dealing with framerates from timedemos in game (some people say the framerate dropped, others say it rose). I'll probably install it next time I format, but until then Win 98 SE is on now. I still don't understand how so many people complain about Windows locking up, crashing, or getting the blue screen error. Windows will do something like that maybe once a month, and my computer is on all the time during the day.

I don't particularlly care for WinME over 98. Some reasons/justifications...

1. Not able to use the format a: /s command (forces you to make a startup disk)
2. media player 7 (actually forced me to go back to realplayer eck)
3. It's too vanilla.

Things I do like.

1. quick reboot
2. 2000 like interface....

Upgrade to ME from 98, naaahhh Either keep 98, or upgrade to 2000....
