Is white chocolate real chocolate...

...or the bastard child of the coco bean?

I say it is not, my friend says it is. Who is teh winnaR?

Ok, sorry for that. I just want to know if it is or is not real chocolate. I don't care if you like it, hate it, think it's fine, or what not. Just whether it truly is chocolate or not.

It's not, there's technically no cacao powder in white chocolate.

But isn't it made from cocoa butter?

I've been researching and apparently only high quality white "chocolate" contains cocoa butter. Other's just replace it with palm kernel oil or something similar.

Finally I can sleep at night!

Just so people don't get the wrong idea, I'll reiterate:

In white chocolate, there is no cocoa POWDER, whereas it is made from cocoa BUTTER. The butter is just the fat squeezed from the cocoa liquor, rending fat and powder. Due to the fact that there is no powder, even the FDA does not recognize white chocolate as actual chocolate, which changes things when you're importing stuff due to regulations.

I love useless knowledge. 😛

Technically it's not, but you still get credit for it when it's given as a gift.

BTW, the standard candy-bar sized Godiva chocolate (in whatever flavor) are a good and fairly cheap way to earn huge goodwill points at work with your female co-workers 😉

As stated above, no cocoa butter.
I prefer dark chocolate.

Indeed! Dutch process chocolate, though it can be quite tasty, doesn't have all of the benefits of dark chocolate!

The litmus test for being real chocolate is if your dog eats your easter bunny that's made out of it and dies. Therefore in this case the answer is no, white chocolate is not real chocolate.

I voted yes, just because I love white chocolate. I don't care if its real or not, its wonderful.

Well then I guess it's a good thing the 27 people who voted no can read or else I would have lost all faith in mankind.
