I've personally had a 40GB Western digital for 4 years and it still works like new. I see so much bad reviews about it and it scares me to buy one. What is your opinion about this?

Every company has fanatics and critics. I've had no problems with Maxtor or Western Digital drives.

I personally perfer whom ever has the best performance/warrenty ratio.

I don't really prefer any HD manufacturer anymore. Each one is as reliable as the next IMO.

People also bash Gateways and Dells but I've never had any major issues with them either...

i have a WD drive runnig great for atleast 2 years. i've had a maxtor die on me. seagate is supposed to be really good. but any drive can die. make sure the drive is well ventilated with room for hot air to escape and thus you will prolong the drive's life.

I read most of those reviews from newegg. I personally think their good because of the one i have lasted so long.

Would you say seagate is better then western digital? I have 1 of each, but WD is cheaper on newegg.

Depends on the model, The 7200.10 line are quick but anything older than that is going to be slower than a Caviar of the same size. The 7200.8 line had some very bad batches, i think the 9 serries ran a bit warm but may be completely wrong on it.

Since the odds of a bad drive are so tiny i wouldn't worry about it. The warranty is a slightly different matter, where seagate have a notable lead (excepting the drives intended for industry).

Western Digitals are great drives IMO. I use Samsung also, real quiet drives. I've had nothing but good experiences dealing with WD. Only bad experiences I've had are with Maxtor, and Hitachi drives. It's different for everyone though.

Weird thread. Reminds me of tucking my son into bed and patting him on the head, re-assuring him that there are no monsters in the closet.

"But Daddy, there are so much story books about monsters"

LMAO

In my opinion WD is not bad; in fact they prooduce some stellar drives. However the next guys opinion might be that they are horrible and destined to fail after 1 year. Who do you trust?

In the end it doesn't really matter.

I have never had any problems with my western digital drives, nor with my seagates, but there are many differant variables that can affect the life of a hard drive. Even my 250mb WD caviars from 1992 still work. 90% of the drives I have bought have been western digital, and yet to have one fail.
