I think the WD is 7200 and the Samsung 5400 rpm. I suppose that means the server would be snappier with the WD.the WD is slightly more power efficient but the samsung is probably more reliable.
I just bought 3 1.5TB Seagate LP's, i was going to get the WD greens but my buddy had one for storage and the heads constantly park making a fairly loud click, he sold it and got a WD blue just because of that sound. If i ran those greens in RAID it would drive me insane with the constant head parking. The seagate LP's are super quiet, the single 7200rpm OS drive in my server is louder than all 3 LP's combined .
Where did you buy them?I just buoght 3x Samsung F2 EcoGreen drives (1.5TB) because they were 0.6333333c per gigabyte. It was the most cost effective drive on the market. I saved $60 (20 on each drive) compared to the WD Green drives. The performance is basically equal.
I bought 8x WD Greens and installed them 10 days ago. I'm just about to do RMA #3. I've been hammering them before putting them in Raid 6 and adding to the WHS storage pool. One drive that died yesterday would hang the Adaptec 31605 & 5805 cards and the Perc 5/i. If connected to the ICH10R ports the Asus P6T7 would say SATA error and freeze during boot.
Since then I've already purchased 8 Hitachi drives, and would definitely get the Samsung or Seagate LP drives (if I wanted LP) solely to try something different. Given, I am stressing these drives purposefully, but I'm not impressed at all with them. When I did the 15x 7200.11 burn-in I had 1 DOA and 1 firmware bug, so this is 50% more failures from just over half the drive population. That being said, it is still eight drives from one etailer with poor packaging so it is much too small of a population to draw conclusions from.

did you say you are having problems with the Hitachi drives or just the WD Greens cuz I was thinking about getting a couple 2TB drives from Microcenter today
Where did you buy them?
I guess Newegg sends different promos to different people. I have been on their email notification list for some time. 😕 I got one from them yesterday and the last one before that was 12/15. They didn't contain the promo. :\Just at newegg, they had an email promo about 5 days ago that knocked the price from $110 per drive to $100. The WD Greens were still $120 each. It made my decision quite a bit easier.
Thanks. That looks very tempting. Might spring for a couple before it expires even though I'm in CA. Looks like the idle power draw might be a bit more than WD's (3.8w vs. 2.8w), but otherwise, probably a winner. Reviews at the egg say it's well packaged, too, in clamshell & etc. etc.http://promotions.newegg.com/NEemai...c=EMC-IGNEFL011210-_-email-_-E0-_-Hostest#HOT
was the promo link - apparently the code hasn't expired yet (18th)
