Is WD the only game in town for 1TB green?

Are there reasonable alternatives for 1TB green drives? Also, what are the best sources (i.e. cheapest with decent packaging and options in the event of a lemon)?

I'd go for the WD 1TB Green over the Samsung and Seagate though. The second question depends on where you are buying from. Newegg is pretty good with prices if you are from North America. Try to catch/wait for one of their Shell Shocker deals on the drive, if you have some time.

FWIW I've been pretty happy with Samsung drives over the years. If you were getting a 7200RPM I might suggest WD because of the five year warranty, but for 5400RPM I think all the manufacturers have the same three year warranty.

Also, a lot of people complain about NewEgg's shipping for OEM drives. If you're buying OEM, you might consider ZipZoomFly instead, last time I got an OEM drive from them they packaged it really well. If you're buying retail, it shouldn't matter too much as the retail box is designed to help protect the drive from shocks and whatnot.

the WD is slightly more power efficient but the samsung is probably more reliable.
I think the WD is 7200 and the Samsung 5400 rpm. I suppose that means the server would be snappier with the WD.

Edit: Whoops, looks like the WD is actually 5400!

Edit2: Actually, Tom's Hardware says:

Spindle Speed 5,400 to 7,200 RPM

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/green-terabyte-1tb,2078-2.html

If I do put them in an MSI Wind Nettop 100, heat will be an issue, but I'm told the WD runs pretty cool especially at idle (3 watts, I'm told, Tom's Hardware affirming 2.8 watts).

I am concerned with OEM shipping, and Amazon buyers recently have complained a lot about bad packaging, very bad, so although their prices seem hard to beat, I think I should look elsewhere. Zipzoomfly has it at $90, presumably with a $15 rebate at the moment. If so, that's the best price I've seen by plenty.

I just buoght 3x Samsung F2 EcoGreen drives (1.5TB) because they were 0.6333333c per gigabyte. It was the most cost effective drive on the market. I saved $60 (20 on each drive) compared to the WD Green drives. The performance is basically equal.

I just bought 3 1.5TB Seagate LP's, i was going to get the WD greens but my buddy had one for storage and the heads constantly park making a fairly loud click, he sold it and got a WD blue just because of that sound. If i ran those greens in RAID it would drive me insane with the constant head parking. The seagate LP's are super quiet, the single 7200rpm OS drive in my server is louder than all 3 LP's combined .

I was quite tempted to go for those Seagate LP drives because of their higher performance, but with all the DOA reviews on newegg, I really didn't want to take a chance.

I don't give those reviews much weight usually, but a HD isn't really something you can screw up installing yourself unless you drop it or shock it. . .

i went with the samsungs in my machine. 2x 1.5 tb F2's.

i can't hear them at all. the video card at idle is much louder than anything else in my machine.

I bought 8x WD Greens and installed them 10 days ago. I'm just about to do RMA #3. I've been hammering them before putting them in Raid 6 and adding to the WHS storage pool. One drive that died yesterday would hang the Adaptec 31605 & 5805 cards and the Perc 5/i. If connected to the ICH10R ports the Asus P6T7 would say SATA error and freeze during boot.

Since then I've already purchased 8 Hitachi drives, and would definitely get the Samsung or Seagate LP drives (if I wanted LP) solely to try something different. Given, I am stressing these drives purposefully, but I'm not impressed at all with them. When I did the 15x 7200.11 burn-in I had 1 DOA and 1 firmware bug, so this is 50% more failures from just over half the drive population. That being said, it is still eight drives from one etailer with poor packaging so it is much too small of a population to draw conclusions from.

Where did you buy them?

did you say you are having problems with the Hitachi drives or just the WD Greens cuz I was thinking about getting a couple 2TB drives from Microcenter today

I'm pretty sure that RAID is not supported with WD Green drives though I'm not entirely sure. I went with the 1TB Samsung F2 EcoGreen because of the price point and it seemed more reliable than the Seagates. My PC is pretty quiet and I can hear the drive, but I made no effort to minimize the noise. The motor noise I don't hear anything at all, but during seeks I can hear it but it's still pretty quiet. If I put the drive deeper in my case and suspended it with rubber bands it would be fairly difficult to hear.

The WD Greens have had problems. The Hitachi's work great.

The WD Greens have died both on raid controllers (in JBOD) and on the ICH10R not in raid mode. The Greens don't support raid, and you can't change the TLER setting now.

Just at newegg, they had an email promo about 5 days ago that knocked the price from $110 per drive to $100. The WD Greens were still $120 each. It made my decision quite a bit easier.
I guess Newegg sends different promos to different people. I have been on their email notification list for some time. 😕 I got one from them yesterday and the last one before that was 12/15. They didn't contain the promo. :\
