Is Wayne short for William?

Well nevermind, I figured it out. The person I was wondering about does go by Wayne, but his name is William, so ya....

On a related note, my wife was trying to convince me last night that "Jack" was short for "Johnathan". I've never heard that before.

i have heard that before. i'm not sure how people get certain names are short for others even if they make no sense.

That is right. You see it throughout history and literature. It was John F. Kennedy but many called him "Jack". Clancy uses John/Jack Ryan interchangably all of the time.

Wayne could be short for DeWayne, but I have never seen it like that (dad is named DeWayne).

Jack can indeed be a nickname for John...(John/"Jack" Kennedy for example) but Wayne is NOT a variaton on William.

How about Jack Kennedy?

I'm Bruce Wayne.
Don't you mean William?
What?
Isn't Wayne short for William?
No, I'm Bruce Wayne, but Batman is short for "The Man who dresses as a Bat."

Wayne is Wayne, Jack is John, Will and Bill are William.

And Willie, and Dick for Richard.

I actually knew a guy named Willie Dick Hopper, no joke.
