Is/was your Lite-On 163D sluggish to open?

I just got my Lite-On from Dell (spectacular deal BTW) and whenever it opens it gets about 1/2 way then slows down

Is this normal or fixable?

Not that annoying just seemed odd

I have the same model, it doesn't act that way. You might try upgrading the firmware. But i don't know how that is going to affect opening the DVD rom.

It's not a problem at all. Mine does about the same, and I think it's deliberate, to make it easier on the mechanisms. After all it doesn't slow down to a crawl, it just slows down a little bit, I dont understand why this is a big deal.

It's not really, as i have said before, I was just wondering if mine had something wrong.

Don't wanna use a bum drive. But since no one else thinks anything is wrong then I won't put any worry into it

I got my friend one of those and was all like, "wow, check that out, it's so sweet" ... I consider it a feature 🙂

Okay, you got me pushing buttons all over the place. Both of my Lite-on burners and my Liteon DVD drive slow the tray down before fully opening, same with my Yamaha burner. My Sony and ACER kick out the tray full speed.

Ok then I consider it a added bonus of love

To ensure they last long and the tray doesnt get unnecesary (sp?) wear and tear.

While we have this thread, I've got a quick question on mine. If I boot windows with a disc in the drive, it will refuse to open when I hit the eject button on the drive. if I go and eject it through the drive letter in windows, it will open. This only happens in windows, Mandrake doesn't seem to care.

What the heck is the setting that it causing this?

That slowing down of the tray is a feature of the latest firmware.

I've never had that problem, stonecold...The only thing I can think of is that you could be starting a program like Exact Audio Copy or some other ripper that locks the drive. If nothing other than basic windows is starting, I have no clue.

some one said acer cdrom. grrr.. i had 5 of those burn up AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

don't ask, just know that compusa has a LOT of broken acers

It's not a problem. My 3 liteon 16x dvds are like that. The cdrws are also like that. They work flawlessly.

my lite-on is slow. my memorex cdrom was really fast. more manly. it opened the tray with authority. this lite-on cringes cowardly, like you're going to smack it.
