Is Wake on LAN capable of what I need?

I am looking to build a new machine, one goal of my new machine is that it will turn itself off if not used for a certain amount of time. Ie: 30min. The problem with this is that I often remote into my home pc from work (using RealVNC).

Will wake on LAn help me with my goal of having my pc powered on less % of the day (to reduce the heat in my computer room)

Thanks.

WOL (Wake On LAN) starts from remote a computer that is Totally Off.

You can start it manually or schedule another computer to contact the WOL computer, and wake it Up.

When you start form WOL the computer Boots all the way from Zero to functional.

In contrasts, when the computer is Hibernating it is not Off, it just save the current stare of the memory to the hard drive and goes to sleep. The computer is still On only in much reduced mode.

There are program that automate and schedule Hibernation On/Off.

Example: Shut Down Expert v.4.42

Wake On LAN primer here: Wake On LAN (WOL) - Start a Network Computer Remotely from your Network or the Interent.

In my experience hibernation is completely off. When restarted the PC still goes through the normal BIOS post process. It is just that when Windows boots the data from memory that was stored on the hard drive is restored. It is completely safe to unplug a hibernated PC and move it around or if it is a laptop remove the battery since all of the data that was in memory has been written to the hard drive. Now, Standby mode is a reduced power mode where the if power is lost so will all of the data in memory since nothing has been saved to the drive.

Thanks nightowl for the correction, I mixed Hibernation with Standby.

I never did it my self but WOL should WOL an Hibernated Computer providing the Mobo setting allows it.

😀

Make sure that your onboard NIC has the WOL capability, or if you are buying a PCI NIC, that it has the cable, so that it will work, otherwise you are screwed. I was going to do it, but my motherboard and network card didn't have the proper connections ect.
