is VLC player suitable for a HTPC?

I would prefer media player but it seems to have problems with ac3(yes I have ac3 filter installed)but assuming I was to use VLC is there a setting to make it always do fullscreen?

First, use FFDShow for AC3.

Second, just use the "-f" flag in the VLC command line entry.
