...is it? I have Visual Studio 6 right now, and pretty much never use it 'cause I think the IDEs suck compared to alternatives. Is VS .NET any better? I'm curious 'cause I can get it for $30 through school.

The visual studio 6 ide sucks? are you on crack? It is the best c++ IDE that is available. The visual studio.net IDE is even better. There is now just a single ide for vb/c++/c#/interdev. The new IDE just kicks arse.

I've got the 60day trial version straight from Microsoft if you want it.

How bad do you want it?

I spotted a couple of bugs here and there but it's definitely worth it.

If you want to develop .NET apps, go for it.

I'm a programmer, and I gotta tell you that VS 6 ide is the best. Like Charrison said, Visual Studio .NET ide is even better, however, it takes a little getting used to.
