Is Vista key locked to a specific version of Vista? Can I just buy an upgrade, will that make it retail?

Is a Vista key swappable between versions? Or are they linked to the version?

I have a copy of Vista Business 32 bit, that is not installed... I'm probably going to swap motherboards and go with a new chipset, only reason is because my current mobo is no good. And MSI will not authorize a 3rd RMA.

My current version of Vista is Home Premium 64 bit.

Also, I was thinking of purchasing an upgrade to Home Premium Retail or even ultimate Retail does anyone have experience with that? <- if it doesn't let me switch, since mine is oem I don't know if the normal cheaper upgrade will work...

No, you won't be able to use Business with your HP key. I think you're within your rights to reuse the HP key since it's a warranty repair.

A Retail Upgrade package is an allowable upgrade from an OEM version. However, according to Microsoft's licensing policies, you can't upgrade to Vista Business from Vista Home Premium. That's because Vista Home Premium includes the multimedia features and Vista Business doesn't. You CAN "legally" upgrade to Vista Ultimate, however.

This is what I plan to do if they charge me for changing mobo's... I figure I will call them up and see if they let me put a new mobo in since this is a malfunction issue.
