VBR will usually save space and can sound closer to the original file than CBR (given the bit rates you mentioned). However, some players may not handle VBR very well.

VBR will give the bitrate needed at that point in the song. It's going to produce the highest quality at the lowest file size. Definitely the way to go

VBR is best, but as for the type of VBR, I just set mine to "O" in the EAC console thingy.

I know up to 256 Kbps I can tell the difference cause I have done blind tests. However, the rest is if I ever want to edit the clips and I might have to recompress, and as a very close backup to the actual CD

thats what im using except ive tried both EAC and CDEX with lame encoder. The mp3 version is coming out too loud - almost distorted at times. The wav CDEX and EAC creates are exactly like the CD so it has to be the Lame. what are some other good encoders I can try?

oh and its a lot easier to tell with a nice receiver/speaker/sub setup than on iPod headphones ;). So what you are doing with it does matter.

turn on normalization in EAC and you wont get that

Never ever had a problem playing VBR files. Not sure where people get that from. Even my 5 year old cd mp3 player plays VBRs fine.

ripping with EAC works if I choose "User Defined Encoder" under compression settings
but EAC+lame doesnt seem to listen to me when I tell it what format I want. If I rip with EAC + Lame it first converts it to wav then a cmd (dos) type window pops up and lame does its thing. No matter what setting I choose in EAC lame always rips it in q=2 vbr

Also if I choose "Lame MP3 Encoder" (not user defined encoder) it copies the wav fine, but then when it tries to encode the mp3, I get this message.
The external compressor returned an error!

Options: -p -h -b 256 %l--alt-preset 128%l%h--alt-preset standard%h %s %d "F:\EAC|0tmp0-!55.wav" "F:\EAC\0tmp0-!55.mp3"

File : F:\EAC\02. Hide U.wav

I dunno whats up with EAC

tried that. no use. i think its because Lame isnt listening to encoding options defined in EAC (or CDEX maybe) and doing its own thing

I use this line and have never received any problems with EAC:

-V 0 --vbr-new --add-id3v2 --pad-id3v2 --id3v2-only --ta "%a" --tt "%t" --tl "%g" --ty "%y" --tg "%m" --tn "%n" %s %d

what should I set the normalizing settings to?
Normalize to 95%
But only, if Peak Level is
smaller than 85%
or
greater than 98%?

where do i put this? in the additional command line options?
http://pics.bbzzdd.com/users/aharami/EAC.JPG

Just put it in the command line.

For mine, I have the first box checked.

Then I have user defined encoder selected.
.mp3 as the extention

Then in the program path box, I have the address on my hdd of the Lame Encoder, in my case: C:\Program Files\Exact Audio Copy\lame-3.96.1\LAME.EXE

Then the command line has the stuff in the above quote.

Bit rate/quality can be ignored (b/c of the command line use).

And of the last 4 check boxes, the top one and the bottom ones are the only ones with checks.

Edit: Here is a picture of my Configuration: Text

If you're running a 100 Mhz pentium, VBR often uses more CPU to process, and might affect your speed.

dammit. no matter what I do, it always come out too loud
And EAC doesnt like Additional command line options if "Lame MP3 Encoder" is chosen. It returns an error code similar to above.
But if "User Defined Encoder" is chosen, it works fine with the additional command line options.

Thats why it wasnt working before

I don't know why it does that, I just followed some walk through of the program and it listed what I have as the supposed best options to have selected. But it is good to hear that you have EAC + LAME working again.
