is using only distilled + silver out of date?

i've been running custom loops for over a decade without any chemical corrosion blockers or biocides. i've been looking at some modern water cooling guides and i see lots of them saying that you must use one or both of the above, and that just silver doesn't cut it anymore. am i making a mistake doing it old school?

As long as you aren't using a lot of cheap nickel-plated stuff in your loop, you should be fine. We could do with a lot less nickel plating on things.

old school is always the best unless someone wants to show me something better that was invented otuside the realm of bling.

Today's world your Custom LCS isnt special unless it has colored coolant running full rigid tubing illuminated til no tomorrow from the gazillion leds you have inside your case.
(Sarcasm)

Seriously, its all about what metals your using.
I still use silver.
Silver was shun'd because vendors didnt want to cough up more expense on thicker and better nickle plating with more chromium in the alloy.
They also want you to use there premix because they make the most profit margins off dye + antifreeze + distilled water.

Lastly, unless your running thermaltake, or running eK alu budget series, you really dont need to worry about corrosion with copper + brass.

I run silver, and i can care less what vendors say, i know what im doing and have been doing it since 2006, which predates before even some of them existed.

ah, it's a good thing i like raw copper then. what you both said about form over function in the modern age of water cooling reflects my feelings as well; i couldn't be happier with the rgb-free soft tube loop that i just built. it's too bad xtremesystems is kind of dead nowadays, i remember spending a lot of time there.

ahhh then you probably know me as Naekuh over at XS... lol
i was the bane of most LCS companies with my unobtainium plated soap box.

Oh and i thought this might interest you..

They still make silver blocks... and it comes in nickle combo as well.
Meaning again if done correctly, its workable, and u dont need to worry about flaking or corrosion.
