Cars run on gasoline stupid, not petrol. This is America.

Wow, what an asshole comment :p

but my car automatically turns on the AC if you want the air to blow into the direction of the windshield. I think the logic behind this is that if u want the fan to blow toward the windshield, then your windshield probably has condensation, and the AC helps get rid of condensation a lot faster than conventional means.

so esentially I use the AC all the time even in the winter.

i'd rather have the option to turn on the compressor myself.

I can turn if off, but my windshield gets foggy all the time, especially if it rains.

I know amcdonald's post was a very feeble attempt at humor but it got me thinking-why is it called gasoline in the USA? Petrol makes a whole lot more sense as it is (mostly) petroleum derived. Anyone have any idea why we use the word "gasoline" and where it came from?

This may be a continuation of the hijack, but I think its justified as the original question has been throughly answered.

Besides I think hijackers should be hijacked.

the coolant from the engine goes through a heater core, which then produces the heat.. the blower fan blows it into the cabin :D

it's not FREE cause you're STEALING electricity to run the fan :p

But....energy cannot be created or destroyed, right? So you're really only borrowing it. :p

Yes it is free in the sense you are just using excess heat that would have been extracted in the normal radiator if you didn't use it to heat the passenger area.

Internal combustion engines are very innefecient at converting chemical energy to mechanical energy. A ton of the gasolines (petrols!) energy goes into producing heat instead. So if it's cold go ahead and use that heater.

Your electrical generation system is always running due to the engine power driving the alternator system.

Electricity being generated is either used or discharged. There is virtually no extra load on the electrical generation system being caused by electrical usage.

Using electricity increases load at the alternator. The more you use, the harder it is to turn.

Yeah, kind of like how you "borrowed" my handcuffs a month ago and still haven't returned them. :|

i think its something like 80% of energy is lost to heat from the engine, so theres plenty to heat the cabin
