my rule of thumb is when the spam gets bad file your email to the limit and let it set for a couple of days. The spammers think they got a dead account and thats all you gotta do.

Depends on the spam source. If it's a legitimate company and you somehow wound up on their mailing list, then you'll most likely be safe unsubscribing. On all the pron/trash spam, NEVER unsubscribe! You're just siging yourself up for more.

Unsub on most simply lets the sender know that it's a live account. Ignore it or make it undeliverable and it will curtail it eventually.

I had spam but just deleted it since I was afraid of getting more by unsuscribing.

I got tired of the spam.

I unsubscribed to all the spam.

I got double the spam for a couple of weeks.

Soon I unsubscribed from all the companies that buy your email from my original spammers so there was no one left to spam me.

I am now spam free for the last few months.

95% of those returned e-mails aren't going to get to the spammer due to how often they fake the e-mail address they sent it from.
