Is Unreal 2 worth playing

So the reviews on this are pretty mixed. About a year ago (maybe a bit longer?) people were pretty impressed with the graphics, I believe. Anyone care to give some feedback or pros and cons.

I'm playing Doom 3 and while the graphics are great, I'm pretty sick of the monotany. And I haven't even "gone to hell" yet, pardon the pun. (And I'm gonna wait a bit on HL2 - a little delayed gratification 😉). So is it worth even playing? Story, weapons? Are does it just suck in comparison to other games now? LMK. Thanks.

Its not a *bad* game, but its not a great one either. After Unreal 1, many people were disappointed with Unreal 2. The game was way shorter, and the gameplay felt similar to Halo. Overall its worth playing, but don't expect to get more than 10 hours out of it.

yeah, its pretty good and I thought it was worth it, just too short, waaay too short

and yes I'd rank it waaaaaaaay above doom3 when it comes to gameplay

I enjoyed it, especially for $10. IF MP is your thing, they released a downloadable addition that introduces online play. Single player is good, too.

Now that it's getting on in age and the engine's been patched and revamped a few times, it's a much better experience.

Download XMP as well ... great class-based team multiplayer (with vehicles!) that got lost in the flurry of UT2K4.

You guys really think Unreal 2 is better than D3? I mean yeah I guess Unreal 2 has a few NPCs that tell you what's going on rather than hearing it over a radio.. but I would definitely give Doom 3 more credit than Unreal 2. I really really hated playing through Unreal 2 and if it weren't for the fact that I hate NOT beating games even more, I would have put it away right there. And on the subject, what was up with the ending of Unreal 2? Wow, how depressnig 😛

Yeah, I definitely think that Unreal 2 was better than Doom3. Besides that fact that D3 had absolutly no story except for the first 15 minutes of gameplay, it was a horribly boring "enter room, monsters teleport in, kill monsters, goto next room, repeat 300x, finding keys thrown in to mix things up" syndrome. At least Unreal 2 TRIED to be innovative and interesting, even if it was somewhat a Halo clone. I had to literally force myself to complete Doom3, which is not a good sign.

And yes, that ending was depressing 🙁

I thought unreal 2 was a great game, the story was pretty good to boot. The defend the base type scenarios with the fences and turrets were awesome and I thought if not innovative was easily the best presentation of idea. XMP is a lot of fun too but i hardly see anyone playing it.
Anyway good luck, it's definitely worth playing.

I played it for maybe two hours before I lost interest.

Unreal is one of my all-time favorite FPS games. Unreal II was wholly disappointing.

I wouldn't rate it above Doom3 like some of the crazies here, but it is a good game and worth the play time. The navigation dude owns 😀

Put in another two hours, you'll probably have it beaten if you skip the lousy AI interaction.

Major Spoiler

It is disappointing from Unreal II. It is short and less complex and does not have quite the same level of game play and options to how you go through a huge level map like in Unreal I or HL.

Some parts are very easy while some parts are very difficult. You go to the ship after each mission which kills the story and feel of the struggling through the levels you get in most cases. And the game is far to much like Halo which I did not like (console game) and it doesn't feel or look right.

It is definitely worth playing just out of respect for the Unreal name but you should not expect to much.
