Is Ultima Online any good?

This is coming from a now-recovered Asheron's Call addict. AC was my first MMORPG and that game took up way too much of my time for over a year. I have tried Anarchy Online, but just frankly didn't like it.

I have seen the Age of Shadows expansion for UO in stores, and have been tempted to pick it up. Gameplay is where it's at for me, and how well the graphics look doesn't worry me much.

Unfortunately, all of the reviews I read on it are mixed.

I have a wireless internet connection, so how well does the game perform regarding lag, etc.?

I played for over 2 years its fun but takes a lot of time. Starting now would be hard, most of the people have been playing for so long.

Your wireless wont be a problem.

Why would it be so bad to start late? Is it hard to do quests, etc. alone, or do you need a group?

I got started in AC real late (~2 years after launch), and it was fine.

Try to get into SWG... i've been playing EQ on and off for the past 3-4 years (since the 2nd day of retail), i've played DAoC, AC1, AC2, Anarchy Online, Shadow Bane, Jumpgate, and i'm sure a couple more MMORPGs i can't remember atm... and SWG, even though it's still beta and has tons of bugs, is fun as hell. It shows so much promise, and i'm convince it's going to deliver. I've heard rumors that it's coming out in a month, but noway in hell i think it's going to be out that early... there's still soooo much missing (i can't really say what since the NDA is still in place).

In Ultima Pking is common and there is no land for houses. The people are nice and if you find a nice group they will show you the ropes.

Well, one reason I have strayed from MMORPG's in general, is because of my crappy wireless connection.

When I played AC1, I had a very reliable and fast DSL connection. Unfortunately, I moved to an area without DSL, and the "lag" of wireless makes alot of online gaming unplayable. Particularly, games that require continuous, fast packet updates like FPS-type games lag too much with my current connection.

I had problems with AC1 from the beginning with the wireless connection, and that's the reason why I no longer play AC1. :(

I tried AO, and it worked very well with my connection, but I just didn't like it.

Two reasons why I am taking a serious look at UO: (1) I think it would run well with my connection, and (2) it looks like its similar to AC1.

Honestly it's the best game I ever played but I started in 1997 with UO and haven't played since 99. I don't know how it is now and it took control of my life such that I vowed never to play a MMORPG ever again. I'm holding to that.
