But at least they have gone through sensitivity training, although they may not be able to spell it.

I think the typing in this forum is about 100 times better than most other places I've been. There's lots of very well thought out posts that I've seen.

Spelling "loose" for "lose" still annoys me like crazy though.

And if anything typing posts keeps my writing skills up, because otherwise I would be completely out of practice except when I have a paper due or something..and if you take my next semester as an example, I'll never have any practice whatsoever.

Are you kidding me? The kids from the last generation didn't know how to type at all since all they had was a Smith Carolina typewriter!

LOL, nice. :D

And I'm with Syringer when it comes to "loose" and "lose". That's about the only common spelling mistake that's really annoying to me.

We hire a good number of people right out of technical school. When they start sending emails in all lower case, no punctuation, using things like "u" for "you", the rest of the company assumes they are idiots and it definitely affects their career. Of course, no one is going to tell them that, so they just sit and wonder why other people move up and they do not.

dumbest kids in a generation
That's actually the most insightful reply in this thread.
Notice the bandwidth saving tactic employed.

That's a simple matter of ettiquette and professionalism.
At that point you have to wonder why they were hired in the first place.

(hint hint: poor management)

You also have to take into account the people like me. The ones that don?t care how they type in a web forum. I?m too lazy to do it all correctly and just don?t care. BUT if I am typing an email to someone other then a friend or some other kind of important document I take my time and do it correctly

We hire people with associate degrees in Engineering. We interview them, we check their transcripts, we check their references. We don't give them a writing test. They are competent in their primary role, so it's not really appropriate to not hire them because they can't write well. They are hired to do engineering, which they are able to do.

If we required each of those people to have good writing skills, we wouldn't be able to find enough people.

It's just that when people want to move up, being able to write well is important. They can still be competent engineers in their jobs. They won't be moving up, though. The point I wanted to make is that it's unlikely for people to be told what is holding them back, when it's this type of issue.

I dont think its the typing thats getting worse.. its the grammar.. if anything kids can type way better than most adults these days because they start earlier in life.
