Is TWC doing dynamic ip's now for cable modems?

I seemed to recall the old standard was dsl = dynamic cable = static

Is that no longer the case?

In my experience, unless you request (& pay for) a static address you were on dynamic addressing regardless of connection type. DSL seemed to be more static friendly from what I saw though.

I think DSL is more static friendly because of the different way the line is connected to your house.

My expierience w Cox was it was dynamic but almost never changed. The only time it would is if their router saw a nic with a different MAC requesting an IP i.e. change modems. If you go back to your original modem or nic, they will give you the original IP. I kept mine for almost 3 years unless I was switching equip on my end.

Time Warner residential connections have dynamic IPs, but tend to stick for several weeks at a time if your modem is always on. A true static one is an extra $5/month or so.

Been a TWC customer for 5+ years now. As far as I know it's always been dynamic with the option to pay extra for static.

I've always used DHCP for my cable connections... but for the most part my IP won't change. In fact, I don't remember the last time my IP changed without me replacing the modem, moving, or changing my ISP.

yeah; this is probably why I thought they were static

At static address is one that is administratively assigned to a device.

Dynamic or DHCP addresses you request an address from a server or servers. Depending on how the provider sets this up you can always get the same address and most times you will as you will keep renewing this address.

TWC? The Weather Channel? That seems odd they would do that...

I'm pretty sure they mean Time Warner Cable.

No, I definitely meant the weather channel. They're diversifying now.

I use DynDNS because I have Road Runner (now Bright House Networks, was TWC) and I don't pay for the static IP. Lately, I've been keeping the autoupdate utility closed because I've really never seen my IP change...

depends on the telco. Cincinnati Bell DSL (zoomtown) has a dynamic external IP and then static internal IP, which is real annoying. Now, insight cable has a dynamic IP, but it will remain static as long as you dont change the mac, reboot the modem and the router, or have them change it
