Guys,

Earlier this year i had posted about a position at Cerner Corporation. They flew me out to Kansas City and held the interview, which went well. Last week i got a call from them in regards to the position, and practically stated that i had gotten the job. They will finalize an offer to me this week.

I graduate with my BA in december. I currently hold a AA degree. The company wants me to relocate to Kansas City, and in regards to school, they want me to transfer to UMKC (idk if thats a good school or not)

I am planning to decline the offer,or work out some alternate arrangement. Great company and great people, the position is excellent, and pay maybe is in the 50-55k range. I am 22, and still in school.

I am going to most likely cite my education as the reason to decline, but i want to know, How do companies take that ? Is it a bad thing, any future chance of employment be hindered etc ? I would like to work for the company, but i need to finish up with my BA. I am too close to ditch college, and go work.

What are your sayings ?

Jesus Christ, people are honestly thinking about turning down jobs while the economy is still in shambles?

Just take the damn job and finish school while you're there. I call that a win-win. 55K/year with benefits is a LOT of money at 22.

i have noidea if that is a lot for what you want to do. but if you are not comfortable with the terms of the job / pay then dont take it.

i turned down a few offers before taking my current job last summer. if you are getting a lot of interviews and other interest, its likely you'll be able to get more offers.

The whole point of going to college is to get you a job. That job is here now so fucking take it!

To answer your question, it depends on how you turn down the offer. If you gracefully decline the offer, it shouldn't affect your chances assuming that the position still exists in the future. Try working out a deal with the company first to let you stay at your current school; if they refuse, they won't be surprised if you decline their offer.

Keep in mind this: School is important, but so is your first job. School helps you get your first job. After that, job experience replaces school experience until school is only somewhere that you go back for football games. If the terms of your employment is agreeable, I would take the job.

That is more than I will be making (base) shortly although the job does come with amazing benefits.
50-55k isn't bad right out of college, benefits or not, especially if they have already found a university for you to transfer to.
Even better if they would cover any cost differences in doing so.

Seriously take it unless you have a guaranty of another position when you finish.
Having to spend months to find something after graduating isn't fun.

Edit: just looked at your other thread as well and where I will be working is a competitor of theirs.

read your original thread. if you are doing systems engineering , which by the way i think is a pretty generic job title , btu i'm assuming this is IT related. well $50k out of school in kansas is probably pretty good.

so the pay doesnt seem all that bad, but them making you transfer does suck . i had a rather terrible job after college but i still wouldn't have traded my senior year to have secured a better one earlier (i got out of school post original dot com, and worked nights in a datacenter for $14 an hour. horrible job and in southern CA $14 an hour enough to live on if you are eating ramen and have no health insurance. this was with a CS degree but like almost 9 years ago ). you have 8-9 months to keep looking. so it all depends on if you want to keep looking or not. it doesnt sound like a terrible arrangement, but you never know what will turn up sometimes.

Thx for your reply. This was my first interview, in about 4 yrs. I still have a job, I guess that's why I'm not too worried. Senior year is the final stretch, I want to finish it, and be done with school . I' guess I will try an arrangement....but we will see

Ask to see if you can delay starting for them til after you graduate. If they say no, decline graciously and let them know you need to get your BA first.

Without that BA, you limit your opportunities if you decide to leave that company.

Kansas city...'nuff said. Maybe if they significantly increased your salary, but I wouldn't move out there for that kind of money. My personal preference aside, if you think you would like the area then go for it.

not everyone majored in pottery like you, raven.

OP, are you moving away from friends/fam? factor in the stress of missing them, cost of visiting them, having no friends in KC. it may not be worth it. been there, done that

They want you to transfer for your final semester? Unless you just have one or two classes that might be annoying. It's going to be stressful doing the move and starting a new job. Throwing a full class schedule on top of that is going to make it tougher.

You'd also need to check to make sure it wouldn't affect your ability to graduate. Most schools require that you take a certain number of credit hours there before they'll give you a degree with their name on it. Your current school may allow you to take classes at another school though and transfer those credits back to complete your degree.

This is a complex issue so I won't make a recommendation...

But I do have a caution. And that is that transferring Universities in your senior year can be problematic.

For example, unless your school has an articulation agreement with your new school, your entire transcript will have to be evaluated on a course by course basis with no guarantees that anything will be accepted.

Many (most?) schools will have a requirement that a certain number of hours will need to be taken in residence as well as a requirement that only a limited number of hours will be accepted as transfer...

On a different issue there is nothing wrong with turning down a job. Though, you don't want to burn any bridges ...

Best of luck,
Uno

my understanding is the umkc is a pretty good school. I have not gone there but from what I have heard in the area it's one of the better ones.

If they are going to pay your tuition (don't know if they are), what have you got to loose?

Take the job and transfer, jesus what is wrong with people these days. You're a baby (22) and going to make good money for your age, a thousand other kids would die for such an opportunity. Go see the world already and get out of your comfort zone.

why the hell did you take an interview and fly out there if you werent going to take the job?

id email my advisor, say i need to transfer to X, call X, say i need to transfer from Y, and take the job.

im still working on my BS, but took a job and just cut my school hours back. id rather be working then in school, and at the end of school i have a degree AND experience, which will work well for me, i hope.

#2 - they're offering you relocation expenses
#3 - they're offering "amazing" benefits
#4 - THEY'RE OFFERING YOU A POSITION!!!!

Dude, what was the question again?

This. You fly out there and then site the location and school as your problems? Why interview if you have a problem with the location?
