ive never used it nor do i really plan on using it. i've been on probably 15-20 trips that were eligible for it (like flying far and renting a place).

I always buy appropriate insurance, but only if traveling internationally. World Nomads is great, especially if you enjoy a more active vacation.

IMO insurance is a waste unless you cant afford to take the gamble (ex. catastrophic illness, serious auto accident with liability etc.)

in general its mathematically engineered by people much smarter than us to work out in their favor over the long run.

I'm living with my girlfriend in Bangkok. I have a double entry visa which allows me to stay in Thailand for 180 days. I also have a job lined up as well, so if I take the job I can stay there one year. I might go to Korea in September but that's up in the air. I live in NJ.

The trip protection from Priceline only covers the flight. It doesn't cover my time in Thailand.

Tell your wife I said "Thank you." :)

Is this the same "GF" that wanted you to buy her expensive purses and was supporting her mother?

Yep. The insurance agencies aren't non-profit. But, it comes down to how much you can afford to risk.

I was wondering, most carries do NOT permit any changes to your flight without paying major fines, or even total forfeiture of your monies.

This made me wonder if their was any type of travel insurance that lets you cancel your flight 24h+ in advance without penalty, for ANY reason. What about insurance that lets you change flight time with only having to pay the difference in new vs old ticket cost.

Example:

You book a flight for $300 for July 5th at 4pm, you decide later you want to change to an earlier flight at 10am. This new flight cost $450 to book, but the airline charges as $150 penalty to change flights. So you have to pay an additional $300 ($150 for price difference + $150 penalty) to change flights. The insurance would kick in and reimburse you $150 penalty. This would again be for ANY reason.

Is their any insurance like this?

I know most airlines offer fully refundable flights, which do what I am asking, but these are like 3 to 4 times the cost.

I just ordered my tickets from Priceline today. They offer trip protection for $34.00. I have until 6/11 4:00pm to purchase before it expires.

Is it worth it or is it a waste of money.

FWIW there are several credit cards that offer various insurances when you pay for the trip with their card. You incur the covered costs up front and then submit for reimbursement. I have had to deal with several claims through various providers and all have paid out although not necessarily without hoop jumping.

Most don't offer medical coverage but some, like the Amex platinum, offers medical coverage\evacuation for you and traveling family simply by having the card.

You are spend $1000 for a one way ticket, what is another $34 in case something happens last minute and you can't make it have to delay the flight? Want to be out $1000?

At 3.4%, that seems like a wise investment. It isn't like Best Buy selling you $50 insurance for your $200 tablet.

I believe there are a few that offer cancellation for any reaosn within 10-20 days but I don't believe anything exists outside of that.

You might be able to find something with certain restrictions at insuremytrip.com though

In special circumstances it can be useful. I bought it just once, my wife was 5 months pregnant and we were going a cruise...

The main financial risk you have when travelling abroad is medical expenses and medical evacuation, which can easily cost hundreds of thousands of dollars in an accident.

The other costs, like for the trip itself, hotels, flights, etc are all self-insurable if you can afford the trip in the first place.

Came in handy for me over a decade ago. I managed to lose my wedding band while I was on my honeymoon snorkeling. My wife bought me diamonds (yeah, yeah, keep your comments to yourself, I have a tungsten band now) and the insurance replaced it.

A while back I purchased round trip flight, a few weeks before I decided to move my flight. I noticed the new date tickets were the same as I paid. When u called to change flights, I was told I would have to purchase a new ticket and forfeit nearly all if the money on my old ticket. That changes were not permitted. I ended up not changing flights.

Do any credit cards offer protection for this?

There is cancel for any reason insurance. Typically you have to buy it within a certain number of days of when you booked the trip. It also is very expensive for travel insurance. More typical is the cancellation for illness or having work refuse to let you go.

You can really get insurance for anything if you're willing to pay the cost.
