Which one has the better performance?

And tiptronic doesn't need a clutch, right? How do you shift then?

tiptronic on porsches is pretty good, bimmers its okay, and on ferrari's (f1 paddle) it's better than anything, including manual

Tiptronic is nothing more than an automatic with shift buttons. It is still slow. Automatics are slow because they don't have a clutch, instead the power has to be transferred through a slush box which results in an extra 5-10% power loss. That is why they are slower.

The Ferrari uses a clutch, just that it does it for you, that's why it is fast.

Tiptronic, steptronic, etc..all the shift-yourself transimission included in most upscale cars are not better than a real manual car with a clutch. The only exception to this would be the system in the Ferrari and in BMW's new SMG which is only in the M3 and an option on hte new 3-series. Both systems have a electro-mechanical clutch which engages/disengages for you at the optimal points.

I personally wouldn't want it because it has more parts that can break, and its not as fun as driving a real manual car with a clutch and shfiter.

Step/tiptronic sucks ass.

BMW's SMGII and Ferrari's F1 are the only systems that beat manual :)

2002 E46 BMW M3 <drool> features the Sequential Manual Gearbox II (SMGII) that is faster than any driver could ever hope to shift manually.

That's true, and these transmissions are very nice. Still, I'd rather have a full manual. There's something special when I rev match perfectly on a downshift, and I just wouldn't get that from an F1 style manumatic transmission.

Tiptronic doesn't result in 5-10% power loss, but it does lose some. According to porshe's website it drops top speed by 5 - 10 mph (i believe) and adds .4 seconds to the 0 to 60 test.

the power loss depends on the specific torque converter. The porsche losses are smaller because it is a sports car set up for more performance at the cost of driving comfort.

By using manual you have the power of half engage, how fast you want to engage, and when you want to fully engage. These are important if you want to do drifting, the whole point of using manual!!

a lot of those tiptronic style things will still over-ride you if they think you should really shift...

Bah, my CL has SportTronic and I never use it...it's not as much fun as I thought it would be (the SportTronic, not the car).

just learn how to drive manual, it's more fun.

besides, the clutch lets you use sensitivity in engagement. important if you want to drop it for a launch, or let it slip a little for a smoother ride.

I totally agree man!! STICK is so awesome!! I have no respect for automatic cars now. man......you get bragging rights too if you know how to drive a stick.
Just go with the STICK, save some money (don't have to pay the extra $2000 for a tiptronic system), and it's more fun.

STICK ALL THE WAY!!

Actually, the new CVT used in the new Audi A4 is also pretty neat. It also has a "tiptronic" like gear shift in addition to usual auto mode. The neat thing about it is that it is actually faster than any manual/stick

Also, the shift points in the CVT tiptronic are "programmed" and so in theory any of the aftermarket tuners can retune the shifting points and make it infinity customisable.

It's a matter of preference... ever taken the shifter on an automatic car and put it in L or 1 from the start, and shifted into 2? that's essentially what a tiptronic is.. Tiptronic is totally f'n LAME if you ask me. I would never buy a car with such a stupid transmission.. it's a marketing ploy.. there is no speed or fun advantage with a tiptro.. The paddle F1 shifters on Ferraris is niceish though, even though it's NOT a true manual and is NOT as nice.. five or six speed manuals with a true clutch setup is far more sporty than a tiptronic.

tiptronic is the lazy man's manual.
