So I was in the market for a new portable laptop and was looking at the x40 thinkpad. I found a seller with around 3000 postives. The auction is as stated.

Brand New Factory Sealed IBM Recertified Product
These remanufactured products are sold by IBM with a W-Claim classification, which means that they are in brand new condition. These are brand new items which were either, (A) shipped to an IBM reseller or end user and then returned unused, or (B) a custom ordered configuration which was cancelled or (C) brand new odd lot or overstocked inventory. They are carefully tested and recertified as new by IBM and come in a IBM factory sealed box. Computers include the original factory software load including OS and have a Microsoft Certificate of Authenticity (COA). They come complete with all original accessories and documentation and have an IBM Factory Domestic and International Warranty. ThinkPads have an IBM One Year EasyServ Warranty, Intellistations and desktop computers have an IBM one year On-Site Warranty next business day, and monitors have an IBM One Year advanced replacement warranty.

Looking at his feedback, there is several people saying that these are labeled as "Refurbs" and sellertelling them just to call IBM. Do you think its worth taking the risk? because I would hate to send the item back or have someone elses problem. Although the laptop will probaly close about $400 less than what I would normally pay. Thanks for the input.

Ask the seller for the Serial number and run it by IBM to see if it's refurbed.

Yeah I thought it was fine then I looked at the feedback, not good. BTW I have never retracted a bid and I just did to be safe. I think I will probaly just get either a fujisu or sharp from newegg instead.

Refurbed and I'd say it might be worth the risk but how much are you saving? $100? $200? Depends.

edit: Just reading the feedback makes me thing sell == jackass though. I'm sure it's no fun deal with customers on eBay but that guy/gal just rubs me the wrong way.

isn't there an IBM authorized refurb seller on Ebay? I think i recall people getting refurbs from some seller on Ebay at great prices.

I am sure that some customers should not be buying laptops on ebay and I know what its like to have jackass customers working at Staples. But I get worried when several people say "Laptop does not boot", "Missing wifi", other serious issues. I also get the same feeling about this guy, hes probaly not very helpful IF there is an issue. That x40 retails for about 1550, it had a BIN for 1100, so I figured it should close around 1050-1150 which I thought was a decent deal. As long as the thing was NEW right from ibm I would have no problem, but if its a refurb I am not touching it with a ten foot stick.

Heres a list of stuff from his feedback....

Super Excellent Service!!! Laptop was short RAM and immediately rectified. A++
Great services. Promptly replaced the labtop with a problem with a new one.
Good transaction. Had memory conflict, so PC&Camera sent replacement right away.
Seller wrote back and made good on missing 256 MB of RAM. So far, so good
Notebook came with no OS. Took 3 mailings to send me good recovery CDs. Oh well

Yeah not that good.
