Currently have a Duron 1800 mhz processor and an ASUS KT400 motherboard. Ram is PC2100.

I want some extra UMMPH on Flight Simulator 2004 which is mostly processor bound. My Duron is crippled with the lack of the cache.

I notice the 2400 is about the highest 266 mhz proocessor that is commonly sold. At 2 ghz with the full cache, I should notice a little more ummmph, no?

Also - there is a 2400 Thorton Core and a Thouroughbred core - what is the difference? Are the both compatible with most things?

What I'm trying to do is a small incremental upgrade for about 30$ (60 - the 30 that I will sell my duron for). I know that I need to upgrade the Ram later - tia for not mentioning that . . .

What I would do is buy an Mobile Athlon XP 2400+ Barton from NewEgg. It has double the cache of the Throughbred processor (more "ummmph") and still uses the 266Mhz bus for compatibility with your motherboard. Plus these are M0 processors of the AMD world and with a good motherboard upgrade you could take this thing places (not uncommon for 2.4Ghz with good cooling). :)

Good luck!

As a matter of fact, if you get a 2600 mobile (now $99 at newegg, with free shipping), 2.5ghz on air is quite common.
