Is this what a failing hard drive looks like?

100% read and write activity but throughput is minuscule. Even simple tasks take forever to do. Making that screenshot was a 30 minute ordeal because even something like switching brushes took 2 minutes to respond. Paint itself took 5 minutes to open.

It makes strange squeeling and clicking noises occasionally but I haven't had any bsod's or crashes, everything is just painfully slow. Does it look like this drive is getting ready to die? Its a 2TB Seagate Barracuda.

Use something like crystaldiskinfo to check all the SMART values, and post a screen shot.
You might also try a different SATA cable.

I would backup anything that you want pronto.

Well I guess my question was just answered. A couple minutes ago it locked up and when I restarted it asked me to insert a boot disc. So it looks like shes dead. It was just a media server so I didn't lose anything irreplaceable, thankfully. Back up regularly, people.

I plugged it into a different PC and got the same behavior.

Clicking and squeeling is never a sound you want to hear from a hard drive. By the time you hear those sounds you are done. Sometimes you get lucky in the race to back it up if you have none. Usually not.

If you have given up on the drive, throw it in the freezer. Sometimes the compression will allow you to boot to it for a few minutes and you can snag a few files that are critical. Have a plan in place though because if you get back on it this way it will not last long once it starts spinning again.
