is this upgrade worth it?

I currently have an A64 3800 X2 in which I am kind of disappointed as I can't seem to clock it higher than 2.4GHz with 1.5v.

Everyone seems to be raving about the new opteron 170, and its price isn't bad at all for what you get, but taking for account the $380 I already spent on the X2, the bill might be tough to swallow.

Your thoughts?

i would say no. but, maybe you can get some money for the 3800, and gain a few hundred mhz with the 170. but, hey, why get the 170, when you could get the 165 which overclocks the same?

With these new Opterons's, the OC is very dependent on the stepping. It's very possible you might get a chip that doesn't much, if any, above 2.4 itsself.

Unless you can sell the 3800+ for close to what you paid for it, I can't see as how that would be money well spent.

I'd say go for the opty. Might be tough selling off the X2 3800+ here tho. Too many opty rants. Go for the ol' burn-in process. Cpu Burn-in K7 on both cores and slowly drop the volts.

From my experience, burn-in is just a myth.

I've let my X2 burn-in for weeks and couldn't drop the voltage without crashing in prime95.

thanx for the input... I felt as if I was about to flush some money down the drain on this upgrade 😛

Why bother, not really worth it at all. The 170 is nice, but I doubt you will even notice anything from the 3800+.
