is this true of the 5850 and 6850s OC potential?

i just looked at two overclocking reviews of both the 6850, and the 5850

both ooverclock to around the same ~1ghz core... but only 1200mhz memory on the 5850, while the 6850 was able to go 1400mhz memory with the bios unlocker plus voltage tweak

card owners: is this true of their overclocking potential?

The HD6850 is relatively new and the few people that have it don't seem relatively interested in the OCing capabilities. I myself just ordered one and was hoping to read some overclocking reviews but there are very few.

I would go with the HD5850, performance is higher at stock speeds and you have a decent potential to overclock.

The only problem i see with the HD5850 is the brand, PowerColor isn't necessarily a brand i would trust with my money...

Can only speak for the 5850 but I came to the conclusion temps on core and vregs limit the overclock. Those vregs get very hot once juiced up!

Mine has full water block and has no issues running at 1025 core 1300 memory. Mine is ref design flashed with hacked 5870 bios. I think I'm able to do 1300 mem due to the xtra little bit of voltage the 5870 feeds the mem.

I have used a few powercolor cards for builds over the last year or so and i think their quality has improved over the crap they produced 10 years ago. That said i cant comment specifically on their 5850 model. Havent had to RMA a card to them so cant comment on customer service.

Earlier reference model 5850's were well known to overclock very well, often into the 1000+ mhz range with added voltage. However the 5850's sold mostly these days are non reference designs that cannot increase voltage. However, I personally have 3 such later models and all three come close to or slightly exceed 900mhz on the core, which still is a good boost over the stock 725Mhz and above stock clocks of a 5870.

+1.

Their PCS+ series are pretty decent.

Im running a gigabyte 6850 and im currently running it at 1000/1150. Temps get to about 65c at load gaming and a bit higher under furmark.

I can comment on the 5850 but so far my 6850 is powering along well.

As previously mention, good chance of getting 1000 on the core.

1400 on the mem sounds way too high - more like 1150, 1250 if you're very lucky. If anyone did get to 1400 and thinks its stable, I bet it's slower due to error correction.

draw of luck.
did run them at 940mhz and smoked the games I played.

waiting game for software tools for 6950 ;)

a couple review sites that overclocked the 6850 got it to 1400 with the voltage tweak.

Is that stock voltage?

See sig, both cards overclock well. The 5850, however, will be much faster at 1GHz+.

Fair enough, I may be wrong. Review sites sometimes get specially selected models with higher spec memory, or a 6870 card with stream procerssors disabled.

The general findings on the web suggest 1150-1250, including myself. It may make your decision a little easier, as the 5850 is still an awesome card.

No. Its at 1.23V. I only got 910 on stock voltage but it has responded well to the voltage. I cant change the memory voltage but i have lowed it a bit to 1100 cause i have been hearing that pushing to to hard can wear the mem controller out particularly fast.

I've got a PC 5850 and it seems fine. Then again, these were reference boards that AMD designed and they stuck a sticker on.....
