I really doubt Apple will do another change of platform. I bet they will make due with what they have until they can get IBMs new Power4 variant, which will be about the same time that article says Apple would move to x86.

Maybe they should come up with an OS that runs on X86 processors and runs both windows and Mac programs. Microsoft could use the competition.

Mac

But Apple couldn't use the competition.

There is no way that apple could take on Microsoft right now.

I would bet 1000 dollars that they don't switch. Well actually I would be everything I have. :p

Nope. They will likely switch to IBM's PPC970. FAAAST and still Power PC.

Also, Apple's Darwin layer already runs on X86. But that's very different than running OS X's GUI on X86 with all the OS X Carbon and Cocoa software.

Apple's hardware sales keep the boat afloat. If they go Intel, who in hell would buy iMacs or whatever hardware they sell at premium price? Many people would buy the OS (most Anandtechers would have it in dual-boot), but who would need the ugly purple box?

Of course, Intel could devise a mechanism to allow the OS to work on certain CPU's, so Apple maintains the control of hardware sales.

Que Apple's "Switch" music
Steve Jobs comes on the familiar white screen

"Like, for years we've been using Motorola processors in our computers...and they've been nothing but one problem after another. Megahertz this, system bus that...X86 something-or-other. I mean, who really has time to deal with some weirdo processor family anymore? Give me a SIMPLE solution!

So, we switched to Intel processors. Now, our Macs are faster than ever, and you can even run Windows on one if you wanted to...but no one would, of course. Hee hee hee."

"My name is Steve Jobs, and I'm a sell-out!"

LOL

If osX would work on my pc and DirectX compatable, I'd be dual booting in a heartbeat. Also the fact that osX can take advantage of dual processing....mmmmmmm dual MP's.....me like

Heh, that would be awesome to have two XP 1600+s :D I doubt anyone would really want apple's OS, basic consumer wise.

Why would Apple choose an Intel processor when IBM already has a consider line of Power4+ parts lined up for them? If Apple would stop playing favourites with Motorola they'd of been alot closer to x86 speed grades right now.

Bingo!

And directx is a windows thing, not an x86 thing (of course, being a windows thing it is by association an x86 thing) .. you don't see directx on linux either, but you don't hear anyone complaining.
There are other things that computers are good for other than games. Why spend over 1000 bucks for a PC to play games on when you can get a console for 200?

I know there is work getting Wine working under MacOs. That would probably be the first step, even though WineX branched off from Wine. The WineX license is a mess: parts are AFPL, other parts are LGPL, and other parts are under the Rewind license.
