I just read on tomwhardware.com that NVIDIA has recently bought AMD, and is creating a new company called AmVidia. Is this true or just a lot of nothing?

I think it is a very good thing that that is not true. If it was that would be a heck of a monopoly and that they could charge basically whatever they wanted.

How is that a monopoly?
Nvidia sells graphics chips and AMD sells cpu's. They are not competitors.

The real story is that Nvidia is buying ATI and Matrox. And Intel is buying AMD. Now we will see prices really go up.

For some reason I cant see both of these things happening. But if they do I may have to find a new hobby.

No offense, but it was pretty obvious it was a joke. There were so many details that were so over-the-top it was pretty easy to see it was a fake. Even the name "AmVidia" is a dead give away. Come on, what kind of name is that? Jeez, what would their products be called? The GeThalon XP and AthForce 4?

About the above joke, about Intel buying AMD or Nvidia buying ATI and Matrox: although it was an obvious joke, either one of these situations would case a huge legal uproar, considering these mergers are monopolistic tactics, and therefore illegal in the US and many other countries. The second one would be even worse because it's an international affair involving the merger of one American company (Nvidia is American right?) and two Canadian ones. The litigation to break up the resulting companies would take years!

Let's just be happy that we have this competition, and hope that it stays around for a long time.

Yeah and after Intel buys AMD, I heard Microsoft was going to buy Intel. At least this way Microsoft would stop complaining about how AMD stole thier "XP" slogan.
