Is this the very best new Android 'tablet' I can get for 50 bucks?

I'm currently using a Kyocera Hydro cell phone as my first Android 'tablet'. I got it for about $22 back 6 or 7 months ago at Target.

It has half a gigabyte of Ram and a single core processor. Since I and my kids often use this for games, this has turned into a limiting factor for us. A couple of the games I've bought as part of Humble Bundles won't run due to the low memory, for example. My favorite game, a Dr. Who themed 2D Bejeweled type game, sometimes has severe slowdown and lagginess just from dragging the jewels around the screen to get matches. This only happens about 15% of the time, though.

I've realized that I probably need to upgrade to something with at least twice the ram and probably a dual core cpu, but I don't want to spend very much. I'd really like something with little or no "bloatware", so a plain jane version of Android would probably be best for what I am wanting.

I recently saw a Cricket Moto E smartphone advertised for $50. It has 1 Gig of ram, dual core processor, and what the reviewer describes as a very vanilla (lean) version of Android. The screen is also about 20% larger than the one on my current model. Surprisingly, it also has Gorilla Glass 3, which I did not expect.

Do you think this would be the best small Android 'tablet' upgrade I could get in the next month or 2 for 50 bucks? Keep in mind that we do casual 2D gaming - not 3D shooters and such.

For for 50 dollars, don't expect much.

Looking at used tabs may get you a better tablet than anything you'd get 'new'.

I was cruising through Swappa's listing, and found a Nook HD for 65.

Most of the tabs in the listings are over 50, but I didn't check every single one of them.

I think I'm going to stay away from anything that only has half a gigabyte of RAM. That's what my current phone/tablet has, and it seems to be a real limiting factor - some games won't even run without at least a gigabyte.
Oh well then the moto is probably the best bet. They have made good quality devices lately, even at low price points.

Not too long ago, "Meh.com" had the archos 97 for like $50. Or $100. I forgot.

$50 tablet sounds like a waste. The minimum I would go with is Kindle Fire HD 6. ($99) Fire OS 4 is based on KitKat (4.4.4) and the tablet has a tolerable screen. All these sub-$100 tablets have really bad screens. App selection should be fine for the price and for the target audience.
