I've been running my AMD 850MHz Thunderbird with 512Mb of PC100 ram for about 3-4 years now. I've been thinking about upgrading to an AMD Barton 2500+ with an Abit NF7-S V2.0 motherboard. The reason why I was thinking about going with this package is because I don't have a lot of money. But I was thinking since PCI express is on the horizon along with new AMD chips should I wait to upgrade? That way I can get even a few more years out of my components or should I upgrade now since my system is so old. I only have like 300 dollars spending money so I can't get too much. Thanks for the opinions...

Amd may drop some prices on Feb 15th. Your upgrade looks good. I sometimes get Fry's electronics combo deals, if you live near one.

It was for me . . . I sold my old system for $300, added in another $200 and got a P4-2.80c (@3.15Ghz, so far), 2x256MB PC3500 an Abit IC7g and a new 350w PS & case.

I am very glad I did since my old Tualatin Celeron system still had some value and the new one was relatively cheap and the PERFORMANCE gains were GREAT!

If you wait for PCI express, it is very (very) likely to be (very) expensive at first. Your upgrade should last you a couple of years until the next-cutting edge technlogy drops into the "reasonable" price range.

So, yes - go for it. A quality upgrade has never been so cheap. ;)

Corey, besides the fact that it will more than likely be years until you will be able to afford a PCI-Express video card, the development of computers has never been, and never will be, static. If you are always waiting until there is nothing new on the horizon, you will die owning an 850mhz T-bird, assuming it lasts as long as you do. Besides, there isn't an AMD Barton on earth that can even come close to pushing the limits of the fastest AGP video cards, anyway!:D
