Is this the future of public schooling?

I’m sure a lot of parents here are worried about what school will look like in the Fall. Some still haven’t heard from their school districts as to whether they’re planning to open on schedule or if they have contingencies for spiking coronavirus (and now G4 H1N1???)

I’m very impressed with what my city has put together in a short time. They hired a Director of Online Learning (a new permanent position) and launched a virtual online-only school. Now it looks like while grades K-8 are planning for in person school, parents will have the option to apply for online-only if they have concerns (priority I imagine for those with immuno-compromised family members.) Curriculum and tools are the same. Grades 9-12 will be online only.

The online academy will still be taught by Durham Public School teachers. Once the pandemic is over, students can rejoin their previous school at semester end and pick up where they left off online.

Remote learning needs to be expanded. Here in MA, I'm very doubtful school will be back to normal is just a couple months. Remote learning can also help avoid wasteful snow days and sick days.

We're back to 5 days of in person learning up here in VT. School system staff have gone above and beyond during this crisis, I've been very impressed. It's nice to feel you're getting your money's worth out of taxes, a feeling I'm not really used to it.

The remote learning is harder for younger kids, even if it's done right and well planned. I can't imagine what parents are going through in states that have clueless governors and school boards, no real plans. Hang in there guys. Things will improve once we get rid of Il Douche.

One blessing of the pandemic. No school shootings! In fact I think also almost zero mass shootings in general.

Maybe this ultimately is how america will address the school shooting problem. How can you shoot up a school if everyone is at home? You can't!
