Is this system worth it?

I already have a good rig, but my brother is currently looking for a cheap, decent system. I found a person at uni selling this system, which is less than a year old, since he decided a laptop would suit his needs better.

Here's the specs:

P4 Prescott 3.0GHz with HyperThreading (socket 478)
Intel MoBo (865P/PE/G/848P)
512MB DDR400 RAM
RADEON 9250 128MB AGP8x
120GB HDD (? Western Digital ?)
LG 8x DVD-Burner
Sony DVD-ROM
Logitech Wireless KB/MSE
Generic Case/PSU
Generic 2.1 speakers

He wants AU$900 (US$666) for it with an 18" Phillips LCD (with no dead pixels)
OR AU$780 (US$577) with a 17" CRT.

With an upgraded VC and a bit more RAM, how do you think this would this thing do as a gaming rig? Is it worth it?

Spec out all the components new and see how much you'd be paying. Probably fairly close to what he is asking would be my initial guess. That video card would definitely have to go as you say... to answer your question, with a good card and a more ram it would make a decent gaming machine.

Hmm...it seems alright to me, but I would be careful when buying full systems from people. This guy may be legit, but he could also be trying to sell you a system with bad parts or he could be trying to rip you off. Also, you could build a rig with better parts for about the same price.

MSI K8N Neo4-F
AMD Athlon 64 3000+
1GB (2x512) Corsair ValueSelect
Apollo 6600GT
Seagate Barracuda 120GB
Raidmax Horizon Case

Those parts should take you really darn close to AU$900 if not under.

Rod:

I agree with Xanis, BEWARE. Buying used computers can be a very similiar experience to buying a used car, they seller is "USUALLY" selling it for some reason other than what they are telling you.

I would say build your own or buy a cheap DELL with which at least you could have a warranty, even though it is very likely some of the components in it would be sub-par !!!

Good luck.

Well I live in Australia, so PC prices are higher that you guys are used to. I spec'd out a similar system with dell, and it came to over $1,200 with a 17" LCD and 1GB RAM being the only real differences.

Also, I've seen the computer, and it seems to run fine - but I didn't try stressing it.

I dunno...

That system you bought was basically the same as the one you sold. Same cpu, same ram, almost same vc...

Anyway, as i said, computer prices in Australia seem to be shocking compared to that of other countries.
