Is this system right for me?

Hey guys. I'm new to this board. I am looking to buy an inexpensive, but relatively functional second system to use as a file server while I am at school. I noticed the system below on compgeeks.com at such a low price and had to do a double-take. I know most of the stuff that they sell is reconditioned or used, but as far as the hardware goes, do you think i will have great difficulty using this system to store files and burn cds? And, perhaps more importantly, do you think it is a good deal? I would appreciate any comments or opinions.

Thanks for your time. See the link below.

Sure it'll work for what you have going on. Cheap, has a warranty and looks complete...it just bug me a bit that it's still $284. Seems like in this day and age we can get more in the line of a used or refurbed system for ~$300...sorry I'm not providing any links to back my theory up but it's late...😱

Refurbished crappy-looking overpriced crap with hardware useless to you (CDRW, speakers) as well as the wrong hardware (15GB for a file server? What are you going to serve, Autoexec.Bat? 🙂)

It also has a modem.. wow, nice to have.. in a file server =)

In any case, you should really stay away from ANY refurbished hardware, let alone an entire refurbished system.

Wholly Schmoley...your autoexec.bat is 15 gigs? Better pare down those batch files you got goin' on. Sure the system is a bit classic but this guy clearly states that he doesn't need a 2 Ghz geek machine...ease up...

better options are,
buy parts yourself (go amd) and build a simple duron system

or

save some more money and get creative with dells configurations. I thought I saw some deal for a p4 1.4 ghz system for around 500.

Okay, so if I do build a Duron system, how could I build it for so cheap? Every time I configure a low-end system it ends up being in the $600-700 range when i'm more interested in the $250 to $375 range... any help?

PS I looked on krex.com and there were some good deals there... thanks for the info...
