Is this some sort of a virus? - Now another one?!?

Recently the Google Toolbar has been replaced by a different (unwanted) toolbar and I can't seem to replace/remove it. I'm not sure when it was installed. Is this a virus of some kind? Any idea how to get rid of it?

BTW- Norton's Anti-virus recently quarantined a file called "winserv.exe", I'm not sure if this corresponds at all with the above stated problem.

When I go to View --> Toolbars the Google Bar is missing and "New Toolbar" has replaced it. If I uncheck the "New Toolbar", it is removed but the Google does not come back.
Is there any registry key I can edit to get rid of it? Any ideas to get rid of this issue?
Help please!

try enabling the other options in the list
for some reason on my system, norton antivirus's toolbar crap is affected when I change google, and google is affected when I change norton antivirus
on my laptop, changing radio changes google, and changing google changes soemthing else heh

I've tried enabling and unenabling every possible option. No matter what I do, it always comes back the next time Iopen the browser...this is some kind of little virus or something. I have even uninstalled & reinstalled the Google Toolbar, but this damn "Net Search" toolbar always comes back.

Ideas, sure, always, but will they work?

Don't know. Maybe any of a few things will work, maybe none. I guess you are running XP because I don't have a Google bar, but then I don't have active desktop/content on or channels or any other animated stuff and use the classic desktop (2000).

Try these things:
From IEx.x, click on the search icon and select Customize. (If you can't see the search icon, right click the toolbar and select, customize. Find and insert the search icon onto the toolbar.) After selecting Customize, select Autosearch settings. Select Google

Other options: Edit the registry
Look at these keys:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
Search Bar
Search Page
Use Custom Search Url
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchUrl
string value name> (Default)
string value data>http://www.google.com
string value name> provider
string value data>gogl
(Don't know why it doesn't spell right.)

Last suggestion: changing the Local Compute Policy (applies to everyone if PC is not a member of a domain)
WARNING: Changing the Local Computer Policy and the sub objects, User Configuration and/or Computer Configuration, will cause slightly slower booting because all the policy options are checked when any policy is enabled. Use at your own risk.

Under Run --> MMC --> add the snap-in for Group Policy (It actually appears as Local Computer Policy)
Select User Configuration --> Windows Settings --> Internet Explorer Maintenance --> URLs. Customize/modify any of the three options you want to change.
Couldn't find other pertinent options under the following, but it's still insteresting to browse:
MMC --> Local Computer Policy (added snap-in) --> User Configuration -->Administrative Templates --> Windows Components --> Internet Explorer.
Objects override IEx.x settings in the user interface on IE (Tools>Internet Options>).

Thanks JustinLerner for the detailed info. I have tried everything within IE, I'll try the registry edit and/or changing the Local Compute Policy within MMC. BTW, I'm using Windows 2000, not XP. Thanks again for the help.

<< Try a *gasp* VIRUS SCAN! >>

He *gasp* DID do a virus scan.

FoolishMcNasty, have you updated your virus thingy yet? Man, its late and I can't think. Why don't you delete "winserv.exe"

I dont know if this is related to the previously mentioned issue from above, but now everytime I open Internet Explorer I get a real time virus message...

Scan type: Realtime Protection Scan
Event: Virus Found!
Virus name: Trojan Horse
File: C:\WINNT\winobject.dll
Location: C:\WINNT
Computer: ******
User: Administrator
Action taken: Clean failed : Quarantine failed : Access denied
Date found: Sat Apr 13 23:35:15 2002

I have scanned my computer (thanks SmirnoffIsTasty for the idea, I would never have come up with that brilliant idea without you), but the infected file cannot be cleaned or quarantined. Can I delete this file of does anyone have a better idea?

Just a guess but have you tried this? Go into windows explorer first, right click on the file or files and select properties, and make sure all the boxes are unchecked. Then boot into dos using a boot disk and delete the files in dos.
Maybe?
