hi all, i just got finish building my computer. i have a amd 64 3000+ 939 with the dfi mobo...and i think the cpu heat sink fan is messed up...when i start the computer, the fan will spin for like 3 seconds and then shut off, or spin very slow. i check with everest home and it says that the fan is spinning at 700 rpm, and then when the fan stops spinning, the reading of the fan goes up to like 9000...thats when i shut off the computer...is the fan suppose to work this way???or is the fan dead???i'm piss, didn't get to do anything on the computer yet:wine:

Cool and quiet is enabled on your computer. The fan spinning really slow at idle is a product of this. As long as your temps are okay, you should be fine.

Yes...sounds like fan control / cool n' quiet. You don't like it, deactivate it in the BIOS somewhere (energy or monitoring section => which board?)... :)
I personally prefer the manual control over the fans and noise ;)

IS your connection good? My fan whacks out liek that here at work and it is due to a faulty power connection.

On the DFI mobo it has a feature in the bios that will start and stop your fan according to temp. My fan stops spinning sometimes when the temp goes below 25C. It usually spins at ~800rpm when the system temp sits between 25C and 30C. You can adjust it to come on or shut off when you want it to. Same goes for your chipset cooler and I think two other fans.

You shouldn't need to switch to AS5, the stuff that came with the heatsink should be fine.

And when removing a HSF, give it a twist to break the thermal compound lose before pulling up, or release the locking lever and remove together, then gently twist the CPU to get it loose from the HSF
